A MOTORIST admitted deliberately driving his car into the path of an oncoming vehicle – killing both the driver and his passenger.

Gordon Cousen, 79, of Goddard Close, Barton-Upon-Humber, and his passenger, 83-year-old Peggy Nolan, died after their Volkswagen Fox was hit by a Volkswagen Golf driven by John Spink on the A1077 on the afternoon of August 12.

Mrs Nolan, formerly of Windsor Drive, Caistor, was pronounced dead at the scene, near South Ferriby.

Mr Cousen was taken to hospital by air ambulance with life threatening injuries, from which he later died.

Spink, 47, of Marsh Lane, Winteringham, yesterday appeared in the dock at Grimsby Crown Court where he pleaded guilty to causing the deaths of the two people by dangerous driving.

Spink's barrister Andrew Wilson said the guilty plea had been entered on a legal basis.

Prosecutor Mark Bury told judge David Tremberg: "The important point the defendant appears to accept in this basis is his manner of driving immediately prior to the collision was deliberate."

He added: "The fact that the defendant admits he drove deliberately into the path of the other vehicle is the issue."

“There must be a vacancy in Broadmoor for this idiot, for deliberately driving into a path of an oncoming vehicle. But you do see a lot of this driving behaviour in North Lincs.. I think it s case of these idiots trying to intimmedate others.”

“Arty, you could be right and i for one don't like to judge too much in these cases as we haven't heard all of the facts. Nonetheless, i don't think the family of those killed in this incident will find much comfort in a defence of 'balance of mind disturbed'. This man has still killed innocent people. Plenty of people face losses in their lives and of course we should feel for them. But not all of them go out and kill in return.”

“I see stories everyday on this site about varying sorts of criminal activity and read the comments. I find it incredible the amount of times I read the public opinion of this country (justice system, welfare state, taxes etc etc). We all know this country is a joke and the good hardworking law abiding people suffer. Its so wrong.

Very good comments relating to this unfortunate story.

My thoughts go out to the familys of the victims”

“Anon. thankyou for your kind words.
After the court case I must say I have totally lost faith in the legal system. For a full week we heard from witnesses and police experts how the accused had been over taking the vehicle in front of him without first looking to see if there were any oncoming vehicles, in fact there were 2, my husbands motorcycle, and a Mercedes Sprinter van.
I understand it can be easy to 'not see' an oncoming motorcycle... but find it incomprehendable that he could not have seen a white Sprinter van also!
His only 'defence' through out the court case was that of clinical negligence.
To say I was shocked by the outcome is an understatement......”

“To the previous poster...i can only imagine the grief you must have gone through at the loss of your husband. Stories like this must bring it all back to you and make you feel very angry.

The court system in this country in a joke. What's worse is the lack of remorse from people who kill people through their own stupid actions then go on to have a perfectly normal life. It makes me sick. As you rightly said, regardless of the quality of medical treatment after your husbands accident, he wouldn't have been there in the first place if it wasn't for someones dangerous driving. Medical attention is a crazy defence, i'm no barrister but surely that should have been thrown out.

I imagine Mr Spink has been advised that pleading guilty and renouncing himself will get him a lighter sentence. However, we don't know him or what goes on in his head so we can't judge whether or not he is truly feeling remorse for his actions.”

“Only last November I had to sit through a full week in court while the man accused of causing death by dangerous driving of my husband, the father of our 5 children, sat in the dock and showed absolutely no remorse.
He pleaded 'not guilty' , and as the trial was complicated by all the medical evidence, his attempt of blaming the medical profession for my husbands death, the jury, wrongly in my opinion, found him not guilty.
Thus he walked away a free man with a few points on his licence, and a small fine.
My husbands medical care after the accident wasnt the best, and mistakes were made, but Mark wouldnt have been in intensive care with life threatening injuries had it not been for the accused's dangerous driving!
At least Spink had the decency to admit his guilt....”

“Chubby, i couldn't agree more. Whilst we don't know the ins and outs of this story, i think the fact that this man 'deliberately drove into the path' of these poor people no longer constitutes as simply dangerous driving but murder.
He clearly has some sort of issues to do such a thing. Either that or he was off his face on drink or drugs. Reminds me of a story not long back where a chap committed suicide by parking his car on a level crossing. He died alright, so did several people on the train that hit him. If these people want to behave in such a manic way then fine, but don't involve innocent members of the public who are simply in the wrong place at the wrong time.
My heart goes out to the families of the people killed in this story.”

“In view of the defendant's admission of deliberately causing the deaths of these two unfortunate people, the proceedings should be halted immediately and a murder charge laid against the defendant.

Any lesser charge is an insult to the families of this murderer's victims.

Leaving a trail of dead behind you is not excusabe nor mitigated simply because you used a car as a murder weapon.

My heart goes out to the families of the bereaved, I can't imagine how traumatic this admission must have been for them.

What a shame we no longer consider the rope to be a suitable punishment for some of the vile filth that kill without feeling or remorse in this country.

Maybe it's time for a rethink!!!”
