Scunthorpe General Hospital has been named as one of the 11 hospitals to be investigated following concerns over higher-than-expected death rates.

Chief executive of Northern Lincolnshire and Goole Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Karen Jackson, said: "We very much welcome the chance to be part of Sir Bruce Keogh's review as it will assist us with all the work we have already done to improve our mortality position.

"Sir Bruce has stressed that this not an inspection but an improvement exercise. He aims to ensure hospitals have the support they need to improve so this review gives us an additional learning opportunity.

"Positive patient experience is at the heart of everything we do and we aim to continue with our focus on delivering high quality care for all our patients. This priority is reflected within our organisational structure, culture and our day-to-day work on the frontline – how doctors and nurses treat the people in their care.

“I lost my mum to cancer last year, whilst she was in SGH, high on morphine she was left to use the commode by herself, she slipped, fell and broke her femur. When I asked what happened the staff told me there had been a staff change over and no one knew. I then arranged a meeting with mums doctor and the ward manager, to be told it would be looked into and they would get back to me......she died on 22nd Aug 2012....Im still waiting. I agree there are some amazing nurses but like every profession there are some bad apples and its time we got rid!!! After reading the nursenancy's comments I have decided to make an official complaint, then maybe the good nurses can do their jobs without feeling they have to defend ALL. We might find out who should be a nurse and who shouldn't. There is so much more to this story, but I won't bore you, other than to say - you don't have to be educated to have a view you just need a voice.”

“I am a nurse working at Scunthorpe hospital aka "medieval dump" aka "a disgrace". I am absolutely fed up of hearing my hospital being slated by people who have absolutely NO idea what they are talking about but who think they have the god given right to jump on the bandwagon. Yes there are improvements we can make. No we are not perfect. No we do not get it right all the time. This is no different to any other job / profession in the world. We are human!!!!! We have been told to make savings of 40 million over the next 3 years. Common sense tells you that this will ultimately effect patient care. Is that the fault of the hospital, the fault of the doctors and nurses?
I am extremely passionate about what I do. I am caring and I do feel compassion to my patients. I work 12hr days, rarely with any breaks, for poor pay under very stressful conditions. I do not want to kill people!! I suggest before people feel they have the right to comment about my hospital they take a walk in my shoes. I would be very suprised if their uneducated view remained the same.”

“This hospital is a disgrace. They were responsible for the death of my sister from cancer due to negilgence and they are currently treating my mum for the same disease and they have taken a total of 5 months to treat her cancer. Well I say treat, they still haven't begun any treatment. They are pathetic and deserve more than an investigation. A formal complaint has being submitted and I'm sure they'll respond to that quicker then they have treated her! They make me physically sick”

“Wouldnt it be nice if, for once Scunthorpe people would show a bit of appreciation for the hard work done at the Scunthorpe Hospital, what an ungrateful lot you are.”

“Clean it up, Staff it up, pay decent wages, meanwhile build a new one on the outskirts with good access & plenty of parking. This would only cost the same as a few missiles & helicopters wasted in Afghanistan. The hospital as it is now is a higgledy-piggledy collection of old & less old buildings spliced together & at times there are more hobo's & people wandering around than in the high street. No wonder there's infections it's like a railway station sometimes. Spend our taxes here not abroad.”

“I almost died there in the late 90's due to an old surgeon using ancient methods. I hope they leave no stone unturned during their investigation.”
