Scunthorpe United are sweating on the fitness of defender David Mirfin ahead of tomorrow's trip to Walsall.

The centre-back took a heavy knock at the end of Saturday's FA Cup defeat at Gillingham, being treated on the sidelines as the hosts scored their fourth and final goal in stoppage time.

Mirfin hobbled off at the end and manager Brian Laws admitted he could be a concern for his first league game in charge.

"I'm a bit worried about him actually," Laws said.

"He's gone into a challenge but he's landed and twisted.

"It didn't look good. He seemed okay in the dressing room but I think we'll find out today actually to what extent it's going to be.

"Hopefully, fingers crossed, he'll be allright because he's going to be an important player for us."

There was however, more positive news for midfielder Damien Mozika, who took to the pitch for the first time this season.

The Frenchman has been sidelined with a long-term ankle problem but came off the bench for the final 20 minutes at the Priestfield Stadium.

"It's nice to get him on the park," said Laws.

"Damien's a player with a reasonable reputation and he's going to give us a solid base in midfield.

"But having said that, he hasn't played any games and the only way he's going to get fit is playing.

"We can't wait for the practice games, we're going to have to throw him in the deep end.

"He got 20 minutes on Saturday, maybe 30 minutes in the following game and so on, so we can get him right and back to match fitness."
