A tenant has been found for the Sutton Arms at Scawby after he agreed to pay a reported £80,000 for the leasehold of the village pub.

A spokesman for the tenant, who wishes to remain anonymous, said the 168-year-old hostelry would resume trading later this month when the full details would be announced.

The free-trade Sutton Arms, which is owned by the Nelthorpe family, closed its doors last month after the business went into insolvency.

The Sutton Arms was once a community meeting place for the entire village.

Now a business in the area has expressed delight about the proposed plans to re-open the pub.

A spokesperson for RG Stores on West Street in Scawby said: "We knew things had been bad and business was a bit slow but we thought it was like everywhere else at the moment.

"It was very sad when the pub closed, so it is great to hear it is re-opening.

"We are pleased to hear the pub will be used once again, as it is not nice to see empty properties.

"It will be good to have it open again."

Residents have also expressed their delight about the re-opening of the pub.

Scawby resident Mike Campion said he was surprised when the pub closed and said that it is extremely good news to hear it was reopening.

Mike said: "A village like Scawby needs a public house in the centre of the village.

"If we did not have one, it would be a huge shame.

"It is great to hear it will be re-opened so soon and many residents will be pleased.

"It is a very important amenity for the village and it would have been sad to see it go forever.

"It is great news for Scawby that it is being re-opened."

The village local, which attracted people from throughout the region, had been run since 1979 by the Almey family but stopped trading in August.

“The comments by @anonymous123 and @Hazzers are absolutely bang on the nail! Regrettably in our experience and observation, as relative newcomers, they aptly sum up the petty, small minded parochial resentments and self interests of many in this backwater of North Lincolnshire! Both its villages and towns!! ;-)”

“Wow! that certainly was a rant by Andrew Barker.
But as he says, if the people who have been pictured outside it shedding crocodile tear at its closure actually used it, then they wouldn't have lost it.”

“A brave person indeed to take on a pub when they are closing on a daily basis, good luck to them.
My dad used to run a very successful pub, that was in the good old days when smoking was allowed. To go to the pub now is more of a luxury, as prices are not eaxactly cheap, personally I object to paying around £3.50 to £4 for a glass of wine, when you can purchase a decent bottle for around £7 mark from the supermarket, I know you don't have much atmosphere sitting at home having a drink, but a couple of rounds soon adds up.”

“As a friend of the Sutton Arms i feel it necessary to comment on this article and also the previous article when the Sutton Arms closed.
In the previous article it was mentioned that Nick Almey took over the tenancy when his mother and father both passed away last year, this is not factually correct, Nick Almey has been running the Sutton Arms for the last 19 years when it has been a thriving and successful business and has been a partner in the business and director for a number of years, to imply that the business has gone downhill since Nick took over last year is frankly disrespectful.

All the so called locals that have since been pictured Marilyn Wheeler and Norah Jones (23/8/12) and Mike Campion above, if they had supported the "important amenity" in the village then i think they are entitled to comment, however once a month for his wifes coffee morning doesn't warrant support in my opinion.

The Sutton Arms pub has been an important part of the community in Scawby and it's reopening will be fantastic for the village but also lets not forget that this was a family business and this family have lost the business, so let's show them the respect they deserve, rather than all rushing down to the pub to have our pictures taken because we once called in to use the toilet and it is such a shame.

And also some factual reporting would be nice before writing stories.

    rant over”
