Discount should be given to Scunthorpe rail passengers affected by Hatfield Colliery landslip, group suggests
A passenger group say rail passengers affected by landslip near to Hatfield Colliery should be given a discount on tickets.
Passengers are being forced to use buses following the landslip near to the colliery since February 9.
Experts are now predicting it could be several months before any repairs can take place.
Passenger Focus say it will be discussing discount plans with the companies concerned.

Guy Dangerfield, Passenger Focus manager, said: "Any closure of a railway clearly inconveniences passengers and they will want to see repairs carried out as quickly as is possible.
"In the meantime, train companies need to make sure information about the temporary arrangements is accurate and widely available to passengers.
"In particular, having staff on hand to help passengers transferring to and from replacement bus services is essential.
"Given how long this is likely to continue, we think it would be reasonable for season ticket holders to have a discount and Passenger Focus will be discussing this with the train companies concerned."

“@Pedro100,
Well, without visiting the site let's see what's likely to be needed.
New crossover, revise local signalling (including design and inspectorate approval), rewrite working procedures, provide cover and toilets for passengers, build station and train staff facilities, improve road access, provide turning and holding space for buses with appropriate infrastructure such as drainage and lighting (including any land purchase and planning approval required) and probably many other things I haven't thought of. And that's just Thorne South.
How long would you think?
And where's the money coming from?”

“Scunny Mike.
How long would it take to make the facilities that you mention. Don't be such a defeatist, we may be talking of several months before the line can reopen. What do you suggest with your finite wisdom?”

“@Pedro100,
You don't know what you're talking about.
Trains can't reverse at Thorne South (there is no crossover). Parking space for buses and passenger facilities are both inadequate.”

“Why isn't some effort put in to find out why the bus has to run from Scunthorpe to Doncaster when there are plenty of intermediate stations? There is no reason why the trains can't stop at Thorne South and restart at Hatfield and Stainforth? The bus journey involved would ony be 5 minutes or so.”
