THE growing number of hard-up families ditching their pets has led to North Lincolnshire's biggest dog rescue centre being full to bursting point.

The credit crunch crisis is so critical the Jerry Green sanctuary at Broughton has had to introduce a waiting list for new inmates for the first time in more than 40 years.

"It's a case of when we find a new home for one dog, there are 10 more waiting to come in," said Gail Windsor, the manager of the rescue centre.

Kennels at all seven rescue centres run by the Jerry Green canine rehoming agency are now chock-a-block, and chief executive Desmond Bagin revealed there was sign of a turn in what he described as 'an increasing tide of woe'.

Mr Bagin said: "People tell us they simply cannot afford the bills."

He said the problem was so bad there were now 300 unwanted dogs at the seven centres including 70 at Broughton.

The centre at Broughton was the first of the seven sanctuaries to be opened in 1961 with the help of a trust set up by businessman Jerry Green in honour of his deceased spaniel Rusty.

“We have an amazing little dog, he was a rescue dog, but he is so lovely and warm. I always find that resuce dogs have so much more to give,as sometimes they may not have had as much love as is needed.
I know its getting hard for money, but cheap dog food is always available (the market is where we get ours from 6 for £1, and how often do our dogs actually need to go to the vets if thy are healthy and happy.
Again i would urge anyone looking for a pet dog to try the sanctuarys around the area, and look for their new best friend there! You would be suprised how many you could pick up straight away and take home with you!”

“Both our dogs came from Jerry Greens in Broughton. They are the best dogs you could wish for. I urge anyone thinking of getting a dog to take a visit there first. The choice is (unfortunately) great - they have many many dogs, all of them desperately looking for a caring home.”

“I am a Big dog lover and have 2 of my own and find this very sad. But though you can get cheap dog food the vet bills are very expensive. If these were affordable for some people I'm sure the owners would keep them and more dogs would probably be homed.”

“Its very sad that all these dogs remain homeless and unwanted, as the old slogan says, "A dog is not just for christmas" if your careful there should be enough left over for a meal on boxing day too”
