A “To Let” sign has been put up outside the store and the letting agents, Brassington Rowan, have confirmed the company will be dealing with the letting of the property.

It will deal a double-blow to Scunthorpe shoppers following the closure of the Scunthorpe HMV store yesterday (Wednesday, March 20).

It closed its doors to shoppers on Wednesday, March 20, around six weeks after it was listed as one of the stores the chain would be closing.

The HMV store – which employs 11 staff – was identified as one of 66 shops that were classed as “loss-making” stores by administrators Deloitte.

This will now mean that three shop units next to each other will be vacant in the Parishes.

Shopper Jonathan Heathcote, 19, from Scunthorpe, said: “People that work at Xited will be upset.

“Shops closing makes people go elsewhere, to places like Leeds or Sheffield. There are also more people shopping online.

“I have heard about new shops opening out of town, which won’t help either.”

Josh Brown, 19, from Scunthorpe, said: “This won’t really affect me because I don’t think the Xited stores are used very much.“It will obviously be bad for the people employed, but these closures are just another sign that the High Street is declining.”

Xited first opened as a ladies fashion store back in 2008, taking up 1,500 sq ft shop unit in The Parishes.

It then expanded to include a menswear store just five months later as part of a move to expand the business across the UK.

Rizzoli Cafe – on the corner of Cole Street and Jubilee Way in Scunthorpe – closed earlier this month.

The cafe employed five members of staff.

Fashion store Bliss, also situated on Jubilee Way, closed its Scunthorpe store back in January.

Meanwhile, The Freeman Bennett jewellery store in the Foundry temporarily closed this week due to “unforeseen circumstances”.

The store was open for business at the time of going to press.

“On the Wright Stuff this morning whilst discussing the budget a panel member mentioned in a matter of fact way that Scunthorpe had a boarded up high street. No-one disputed this statement. It would appear that on a national basis Scunthorpe High Street no longer exists.”
