Council chairman Trevor Handley has just had the Rathlin proposal land on his mat.

He said: "We're obviously worried. We've already got people working to the north, south and west of us."

The initial Rathlin proposal is just for a test site.

If nothing is found the plan will stop at that.

Equally, if petroleum is discovered, that will require a relatively simple drilling procedure, similar to several operating in Lincolnshire.

But if shale gas is discovered, Rathlin may well want to pursue extracting it. That could mean Aldbrough Parish Council being faced with an application to allow fracking.
