MOTORISTS paid out £11.6 million after being caught by speed cameras in the Humberside Police force over the past five years.

But less than 30 per cent of that money was ploughed directly back into road safety initiatives.

Despite 133,163 drivers being caught breaking the law by speed cameras since 2005, only £3.2 million of what they had to pay was used to make local roads safer.

Superintendent Judi Heaton, head of the criminal justice unit at Humberside Police and who is tasked with reviewing speed enforcement, said: "The £11 million sounds like a lot of money, it is a lot of money. But all the money from fines goes to the Treasury, central Government.

"Any income that Safer Roads Humber get from educational courses is ploughed back into road safety in the local area."

Currently, individual police forces cannot receive one penny from a £60 speeding fine.

The only money which can be retained in the region is the £75 fee motorists pay to attend speed awareness seminars.

“Ron may in fact be right (for a change), but that doesn't mean the speed limits are all right does it? The pure fact that the speed limits in many places have been reduced and then enforced with cameras is purely to bring in revenue! The police are too badly funded to catch drug dealers and burglars, so stick up a camera and put a copper behind a bush, and this provides some evidence that the are worth what we pay for them. It's a scam, not about safety, not about saving lives, just about making money. It would cost money to provide proper school time cover on main roads etc. so we have to put up with this pathetic excuse. If the cameras are all about safety, why is there regularly a camera on the M180, hidden from the view of the traffic behind a bridge parapet? Money...not Safety.”

“They can only crush uninsured and untaxed cars and insist on recovery if they arrest the driver and he cannot provide someone to remove the vehicle. They can't just take your car if you don't pay a fine, recovery of unpaid fines is not related to ownership of your car, otherwise most villains would be walking. If we are on the subject of stupid ideas formulated by Labour which disrespect the motorist, look at the £5000 subsidy on electric vehicles and the scrappage scheme. For £1000 you could do an engine conversion to the latest environmental specs. and create local jobs instead of which, we subsidise Japanese and Chinese battery manufacturers.”

“Camera in Howden 100yds from and in direction of de-restricted sign (60mph) is purely to catch people out. It's safer to be watching the road than glancing down at the speedo every couple of seconds, yet 30mph through village streets is downright lethal, so just relying on these cameras is a nonsense.”

“I have to agree with Ron, Broughton, it's all caused by a heavy right foot, but show my a driver that can honestly say they have NEVER ever exceeded a speed limit intentionally or unintentionally.
Speeders are like Police drivers it seems ok when aiming a car at high speed but in case of police drivers according to daily press they are useless ar reversing so it is going to cost us hundreds of thousands of pounds to fit reversing sensors to police vehicles to try to cut cost of damage caused by them. As for not paying the fines they could just crush your car. Anyone know the date it changed under nu liebore when the rules altered so all revenue went to the goverment instead of road safety organisations from speed cameras.”

“The era of the speed camera is coming to an end. The Police have been forced to admit that their own figures prove 95% of accidents occur within the speed limit. Hospital admissions for traffic accidents have remained static for over a decade at around 90 per 100,000 head of population. Fact. So you see, it really has all been just another con.”
