NORTH Lincolnshire COuncil is to spend £215,000 installing cycle paths around the Queensway roundabout on Ashby Road in a bid to boost safety.

But the work, scheduled to last for two months from Monday, could cause traffic chaos as lane closures are set up to protect workers.

The project will mean Ashby Road is reduced to one lane on both sides of the roundabout for four weeks from Monday in the first stage.

The Queensway and Kingsway will then be reduced to one lane for a further four weeks in stage two of the scheme.

The final stage will be a 30-hour complete closure of the Queensway roundabout over the weekend of July 17 and 18 for resurfacing.

Head of safer roads Pete Scott said the work would boost safety on the roundabout, which has seen 16 accidents in the past five years, resulting in six injuries to pedestrians and cyclists.

He said: "We are trying to make it safer for pedestrians and cyclists.

"And if you make something safer, you might encourage more people to use it more.

"We're taking the opportunity to resurface the roundabout as well. If you don't do it now, you'll get potholes."

The Queensway roundabout has not had similar resurfacing work carried out for at least 10 years and the work is to be carried out by North Lincolnshire Council's own teams.

The money for the current project is coming from the agreed highways budgets for 2010/11 and is not drawing resources from elsewhere.

“'Yes, providing motorists are not causing any problems/accidents, they do have the right ! Motorists are taxed up to the hilt and easy targets for the police. Cyclists SHOULD give something in return - perhaps a small amount of road tax - everyone else has to pay for the right to be on the highway'

I pay my council tax as well as road tax. You seem to be saying that motorists have some sort of right of way over the cyclist, to be able to be first through the junction because they are bigger. I hope your idea doesnt lead you to a court of law after an incident with a cyclist, I could see you losing”

“Mark said : "The problem seems to be motorists who think they have the right to drive how they like because they pay their taxes". What has that to do with all this? Yes, providing motorists are not causing any problems/accidents, they do have the right ! Motorists are taxed up to the hilt and easy targets for the police. Cyclists SHOULD give something in return - perhaps a small amount of road tax - everyone else has to pay for the right to be on the highway !!! And some cyclists are a dam nuisance - one turned off to the right in the front of me the other day and never bothered to signal. Wonder who would have been blamed if I hadn't braked and had hit him/her !!! They should also be made to sit a theory test on the rules of the road !! I agree with Meg on this one.”

“Brian, So swerving around road humps isnt dangerous driving? Even at sub 30mph?

Also I pay road tax for my car as well as council tax. The general consensus seems to be that a cyclist has no rights and doesnt pay a penny toward anything.
Yes we do need a safe cycle route from Ashby to Scunthorpe. The problem seems to be motorists who think they have the right to drive how they like because they pay their taxes.”

“Meg's got an excellent point, I've been resisting commenting on this my self but lets be honest, is this something we *really* need?

Much as I'm very supportive of the environment and green travel, I have to say I don't see either :

1 - The environmental payback of the construction's carbon footprint vs increase in cycle use and decrease in car CO2

2 - How we are expected to pay this under the current economic climate....

I'll be keeping an eye on Mick Grant's blog (other councillor blogs are also available!!) to see if he justifies how this decision was made.

One day maybe some one will ask us what we the tax payer want before glibly following pet road improvement schemes.....”

“Do these people live on the same planet as the rest of us?? Motorists have to pay road tax to pay for roads, time cyclists paid something to pay for their facilities!”
