After going two years without victory, The King's Arms has reclaimed the highly coveted Haxey Hood.

As a century's old tradition dictates, villagers from Westwoodside and Haxey joined a mighty scrum, where competitors wrestle to sway a ceremonial leather cylinder to one of their local hostelries.

The King's Arms, in Haxey, won the Hood for three consecutive years in 2008, 2009 and 2010, but has fallen short in the last two years.

With the event falling on a Saturday, locals described the attendance as one of the best they have ever seen.

And with conditions near perfect for early January, the sway got off to a quick start across the fields.

Battle for control of the Hood lasted three and half hours in 2012, but this year the game seemed to be up after just two.

Brief resistance outside Haxey was quickly overcome and the Hood rolled past the The Loco and the Duke William, last year's winner. The exhausted sway then drove the Hood on to The King's Arms for a glorious victory in just under three hours, with the pub already packed to the rafters with cheering patrons.

Amongst the party atmosphere, landlady Kerry Thompson said: "I can't believe I've just won the Hood."

Under the ancient rules of the Haxey Hood, for a pub to win the game its landlord must touch the Hood from his or her front step.

The winners then display it proudly for one year until the next annual event comes around and battle commences again.

“At the end of Simon's video (at 5:24) it says The Haxby Hood. A slight mis-spelling my friend Brian from Riddings pointed out.”

“What a rabble, but a good natured rabble, a damn sight more cultured than those idiots displaying mass hysteria at the President's speech in Syria today.
Long may this old fashioned British tradition take place.”

“The Lord, the fool and the chief boggin, why is it the same actors who play the same characters every year?”
