"in a town that was failing I would be doing my absolute best to support that very same town back from the brink of death"
First Scunthorpe is not failing, the High Street is. Same as many many towns across the country.
Second, Scunthorpe has already addressed the issue by agreeing to planning of replacement retail establishments where the shopkeepers believe the people of Scunthorpe now want to shop - Doncaster Road.
Third you clearly do not believe either that the town was failing , because reporting to anyone that will read this (and from the comments below that includes people who do not live in the area) that you would do you do your absolute best to bring it back from the dead, is saying its dead its useless don't bother coming - so clearly would be counter productive.
If a business has 2 shops close together with the decline in High Street sales (everywhere) it makes sense to close one and offer the best selling products of both shops in just one. Its not rocket science and if you dont do it you end up in administration as per Game /Gamestation. Which shop did they keep? That's right the smallest one.
High Streets are a thing of the past like ploughing with horses, adn VHS recorders, move on ....”

I wouldn't buy a ring-pull from your "fantastic jeweller"; I went in there once and they were so rude! I'd rather drive to Timbuktu than shop there again. And the jewellery looked like it needed a good clean.”

“The council are at fault , Solar powered litter bins , But no toilets , bad traffic planning , pot holes , Closing area to protect drunks leaves town smelly dis- guarded take away , smell of urine from people using shop door ways as toilets , Years of bad planning ,And high rates for sub stander-ed environment .”

“MoragmcShin why on earth would the closing of Ernest Jones result in people being forced into buying rings in another town? Clearly not a factually based opinion. You have a fantastic jewellers further up the High Street which can compete with similar businesses across the entire country. Presumably the rising cost of fuel escaped your argument when you assumed people would be better off sitting in the car for an hour or two to purchase the same thing they can get on their doorstep. I agree on the shambles of the parking situation, I have never understood the issue with the parking, other than it is ridiculously cheap and to be fair longer stay car parks would be useful. On a very rare and recent trip to Lincoln I paid £7.00 for 2 hours! If I had invested my life, my childrens education and my mortgage in a property in a town that was failing I would be doing my absolute best to support that very same town back from the brink of death because essentially I wouldnt want my life's work going up in smoke never mind anybody elses. The people of Scunthorpe should get off their backside, stop being so negative and pull together to make the council hear your opinions, if enough of you stick together instead of tearing the place apart progress may actually start”

Wake up and smell the coffee my friend, The reason prestige shops like M&S pulled out of the town centre only to jump at the chance to reopen in an out of town location is because of the state of Scunthorpe town centre, Why do people prefer to travel miles from Scunthorpe to spend their money? It's because of the state of Scunthorpe town centre. I fear nothing will be done to improve the town centre untill it completely dies because the people running it really believe they are doing a good job and it is everybody else's fault.”

“Signet (the parent company) has closed the better quality Ernest Jones but retained the budget "jeweller" H Samuels, that pretty much sums up our High Street. It's been a long time coming, a slow lingering death, but the end is nigh.
Fortunately, it's easy to travel to other towns with proper shopping centres. It's a bit sad that people who want to marry in Scunthorpe will have to go elsewhere for decent service and a ring now.
This makes all that tacky street furniture that Liz Redfern bought to tart the place up look even more embarrassing now. And Dakin's "free" parking has failed.
Stop putting sticking plasters on an autopsy and do the job properly or stand back and stop wasting money.”

“....but of course when people oppose M&S coming to the town we are met with 'but the town needs it and to hell with the High Street', and suddenly everybody has enough money to justify its presence. The global recession hasnt escaped anybodys notice, least of all mine but I notice the people of Scunthorpe all seem adamant on reminding us how they would prefer to travel to Meadowhall or Lincoln, and even Gainsborough than shop in Scunthorpe (cementing that there is disposal income in the area). It will be those people who again cant resist but to put the knife in at another shop closure. The Signet group is actually performing reasonably well across the board, despite the recession but with the general negative attitude of the vast majority of Scunthorpe I can see why they wouldnt renew their lease. To be out of 'touch with reality' is absolutely absurd, it is a middle of the road jewellers selling average priced wedding rings and a small selection of lower end branded watches, its hardly Cartier!!!”

“I hardly think my post merits your comment on 'revelling' in the fact this shop is closing its doors. I was stating the obvious, people are more intent on putting food on the table rather than a necklace around their necks. It's just a matter of priorities coming first.
I would rather we could all go to this shop and not blink at buying their goods, keeping the staff employed. Unfortunately in this economic climate survival comes first, and luxuries second.”
