Families can save £50 a month on food bills, council claims
Families can slash £50 a month from their food bills, according to Lincolnshire County Council.
It claims freezing food, cutting down on the amount thrown away and using frugal recipes will all contribute to saving households cash and helping the environment.

In Lincolnshire, 87,000 tonnes of food was wasted last year – an average of 120kg person, worth £150m.
People are now being urged to make the most of harvest food in Lincolnshire this autumn by taking up the aims of the Love Food - Hate Waste campaign.

Grasby councillor Lewis Strange, who is well known in farming circles, is the executive member for waste services and green issues.
The former Brigg Hockey Club player explains: "When we throw away good food, we also throw away the water that’s been used to grow and produce it.
"It takes 100 buckets of water just to produce one loaf of bread.
"When we open the dustbin lid, it’s important to remember the effort and energy that goes into bringing the food to our tables.
"The average family household in the county can save £50 every month by freezing food instead of throwing it away, at the same time as helping the environment."
The council is encouraging people to try recipes online at www.lovefoodhatewaste.com - including a vegetable thai curry and spinach and potato soup – all of which can be frozen to eat another day.
Councillor Strange said: "It’s a great way to use up what’s in the fridge, save money and help the environment too.
"Harvest time is an ideal opportunity to freeze down the quality produce we are lucky to have here in Lincolnshire. Let’s rescue food from the fridge before it’s too late; it’s bread and butter stuff!"
Across the UK, more than seven million tonnes of good food was wasted last year – costing the country a whopping £12-billion.
This avoidable wastage was also responsible for 17 million tonnes of CO2.

“What he wants to be looking at is how many tons of take away leaflets we get put through our doors each week and the five i get each week from sky and virgin all tax deductible , put a stop to this first . total waste . And is it true the delivering leaflets counts as a job and wages are made up from tax payers money .”

“Good point Perry! 100 buckets of water to make one loaf of bread? I've never heard such nonsense! I would of thought around 300ml would be ample! I'd like to see the size of mr Strange's weekly food bill, and judging by how fat he is i bet not very much goes to waste!”

“Just another know-it-all Tory, talking down to the plebs. He's probably tucking into his foise gras whilst having a good laugh at the lower classes chasing the last baked bean around the bottom of the tin.”

“I've just tried making a loaf of bread with 100 buckets of water. Let's just say, I had to slice it with a soup spoon!”

“Mr Strange should stick to council matters.
What people do with their money and food is their own affair.
His job is to ensure the bins are emptied and a hundred other mundane local govennment activities and not to pontificate to us on how we should live.”

“Can't help but wonder if he does all the shopping and meal preparation at home! Also how does he know that 87,000 tonnes of food was wasted last year in Nth Lincs - did he seperate it all out from the other rubbish when it got to landfill and scrape it out of half empty packets? The man's a fool.”
