A NEW consultation on gypsy and traveller sites in North Lincolnshire will begin next month.

Sites at Caistor Road, Barton-Upon-Humber, and Conesby Quarry, Scunthorpe, are to come under fresh scrutiny by the public.

The second stage of the North Lincolnshire Council consultation will run for six weeks from January 16.

Cabinet member for housing Coun Mick Grant said: "We need to know of any other potential suitable sites in Brigg, Barton or Scunthorpe."

The two sites have already proved controversial since they were selected in a consultation earlier this year.

Scunthorpe Speedway neighbours the Conesby Quarry site but staff there oppose re-opening area as gypsy site.

Promoter Rob Godfrey said: "We are putting a submission together and come January we will stand our ground and come out shouting."

“i cannot understand a council that pays £650,000 (ok with a huge grant and massive handouts) to clean up an area - then site travellers, who dont want to live in Scunthorpe, after using the area as a landfill site prior on there. It may have something to do with further grants that will be wasted on cycle lanes and mini roundabouts, and bumps in the road on a route to the tip. Whilst the road next door with schools on is a race track. Good Old Labour they know how to spend our hard earned.

Let the travellers live in Brigg, and Cleethorpes where they want to - or are those seats too marginal

Speedway folk are just the tip of the iceberg who are going to be unhappy wen the truth is out”

“When the whole country is in chaos, and verging on bankruptcy, what a fantastic idea: waste hundreds of millions of pounds of OUR money, on forcing law-abiding, tax-paying citizens to have filthy gypsy sites on their doorsteps, and never a moment's piece of mind again. I will not be able to give my house away - a lifetime's work and all for nothing. WHERE ARE MY HUMAN RIGHTS? Why is Shona McIsaac not fighting our corner? What kind of feeble jokers do we have in this area, supposedly 'representing' us? If Plymouth can say NO, why should WE suffer instead?”

“Fact of the matter is we don't want these smelly pikeys on our doorstep. They bring absolutely nothing to the area in which they live apart from filth, crime and scum.”

“first of all Gypsies and Travellers have not chosen to opt out of society they were born nomadic, It is the fault of the tories for abolishing site provision in the 1994 criminal justice act, john majors government said that if Travellers bought their own land to provide sites this would be looked upon favouribly the fact is Gypsies and Travellers have bought land and 95 % of applications get turned down . if the Travelling commuity owned the sites they would be better maintained and not cost the tax payer 1 penny. you cant have it both ways . Gypsies and Travellers are tax dodgers and scroungers? make your mind up. they pay taxes just like you and I but unlike the settled community they are prepared to get of their backsides and look for work. they are not just moaning mnies like you lot of biggots who dont want sites shut up the sweedway NOW!”

“My Finance Laura's Family are gypsys from Burton. And they are very nice people if you know how to handle them and are good at bare knuckle fighting and badger baiting, I personnally would have no problem at all if they built a gypsy camp near my house. After all Ashby is a bit of a dump anyway.”

“The Conesby site is unsuitable for a gypsy/travellers. It is too far off the main road and too remote. It is a haven for the wrong doers, police and councilors have no control over what goes on down there, as we found out.Thousands of pounds worth of damage has been caused by theft, fire and destruction at the expence of Mr Godfrey. No arrests have been made. Why should we law abiding citizens be denyed our sport. (Mr Godfrey can only stand so much) we supporters pay our taxes. GYPSY/TRAVELLERS DO NOT!”

“I don't see Gypsies campaigning outside Civic centre for a site to be plonked on so why are we bothering to encamp them somewhere they might not want to be. What about Reeds Island in the Humber as long as the deer are happy.”
