STRIKER Joe Garner has warned Scunthorpe United's relegation rivals to expect a charge up the table from the Iron in the coming weeks.

The on-loan Nottingham Forest front man struck from the penalty spot for the only goal of the game against Swansea on Saturday.

And having already beaten another top six side in his parent club, a few weeks earlier, he believes United are showing the necessary fight to drag themselves out of the drop zone.

"If you look at the league now, it's very close," said Garner, whose side are now just a point below fourth-bottom Crystal Palace.

"I think if we play well in the next couple of games, we will be out of the position we're in.

"It was a big three points.

"Swansea are a very good side, everyone could see that, and they have a great chance of going up.

"We knew we were going to have to make it a bit of a battle, and we did that and took our chance when we got it.

"If you look at the results we've had here – we've beaten Forest and Swansea, and if you look where they are in the league, it shows they are two very good sides.

"Maybe teams like that don't really want to come here.

"The pitch is very difficult to play on when they all want to pass it.

"It's not the nicest place for them to come and we use that to our advantage.

"The fans get behind us, which gives the lads a bit of an extra edge and helps us get the wins.

"We're picking points up at home. Now we just need to try to not get beat away.

"If we can pick up the odd three points away from home, we will soon be out of the situation we're in at the moment. The lads are very confident.

His second half penalty at Glanford Park was Garner's fourth strike for the Iron since joining in January.

Having a regular run in the side is helping to improve his game, according to the 22-year-old.

And United are reaping the rewards of that in the form of goals.

"It's good for myself, but more importantly, I'm here to do a job for the team and hopefully I've done that," he said of Saturday's performance.

"I really enjoy it here and think I'm doing all right.

"When you are playing, you are going to improve with the more games you play.

"I'm just enjoying my time here at the moment.

"We're a very good bunch of lads and we all work hard for each other.

"We all want to move in the right direction and we all want the same thing."

“CARL, I can assure you I'm not a "happy clapper" as you so childishly call it. I'm a long standing supporter who offers praise and grumble in equal measure as I see fit. I have watched this club labour in the bottom division for decades and am enjoying the fact that we are now in our third season in the Championship. Why do you have such a downer on folks who are happy?
Edie, what do you do to attract more fans? Remember the club belongs to us supporters and we will be around long after the directors have come and gone so surely it's up to each and every one of us to get more folks through the gate to enable us to succeed.
Why take the lazy attitude that pervades this country and leave everything to someone else?”

“Oscar and Robin - this is EXACTLY why people repeatedly call for the club to do more to try to attract more support. And then Wharton states in the ET that it's not worth trying! Still waiting for the ET to tackle him on that one. Any chance of it, Journos?”

“Robin, and the rest of the clapper brigade, for our club to show intent /ambition on and off the pitch it will not cost more than we have coming in.It will just need our chairman to let us in on his future plans if any to help SUFC move forward, sorry Robin cannot attend Barnsley due to retail job,my next game will be Preston, lets hope we continue the great escape."UP THE IRON"!!!”

“Robin - good point about the income of other clubs in this division.
I think a lot of the finance side of clubs is more to do with how it's spent rather than how much there is. I see today, Leicester have announced losses of £7.5 million and they will probably keep spending beyond their means, to try to achieve success because they are an 'ambitious club'
Scunthorpe, apparently, aren't 'ambitious' but at least with Wharton in charge of the purse strings, they will stay solvent.”

“CARL you really must learn to read whats written not what you think is written.
All I've done is point out that every other club in this division has a higher income than us, never did I suggest that anyone had asked the club to spend silly money.
As for the "clapperitis" jibe, you just make yourself look foolish as you know nothing of me. See you at Barnsley?”

“Robin are you suffering from clapperitis, who exactly has asked the club to spend silly money on players.I think you will find the answer is nobody. With a certain amount of funds grants at the clubs/chairmans disposal all most want is a competitive team and improvements to our ground, not just the chairmans cosy corner. If Chesterfield can show ambition surely as a championship club so can we,without breaking the bank."UP THE IRON"!!!”

“We may have got nearly £6,000,000 from league funds but so did every other club in the division, why do so many forget this?
The Hooper money is a drop in the ocean compared with the extra cash every other club in the division receives through higher crowds, if the townsfolk actually backed the club the difference wouldnt be so great.
If every club spent £10,000,000 on players 3 would still get relegated. Why overlook this?”
