Getting ready to power up to 200,000 homes from plant near Brigg
Centrica is well advanced with plans to build a biomass fuelled power station near Brigg which will eventually generate enough electricity to supply up to 200,000 homes.
Public consultation is still ongoing about the project earmarked for a site next to the firm's existing gas-fired power station adjoining the New River Ancholme, on part of the former Brigg sugar factory site which closed in the 1990s. The new plant, which will create 50 full-time jobs when operational, will generate up to 137mw of electricity – enough to supply up to 200,000 homes or an area four times the size of Scunthorpe.

The Brigg project helps highlight the growing necessity for new electricity generation with existing capacity expected to fall from 2015 as older power stations are closed.

The biomass fuelled station will stand on land adjacent to the existing Glanford Brigg gas fired power station which is owned by Centrica.
It is expected that biomass is most likely to be transferred from ship to rail at Immingham.
Trains 500 metres in length, made up of container wagons, will then be hauled through Ulceby, Barnetby and Brigg to the site visible from Hibaldstow level crossing.
The wagons will then be taken into a specially built railhead to be unloaded before returning empty to Immingham.
A public consultation exercise on the project continues with an exhibition at Ancholme Leisure Centre, Brigg, on Friday, October 5, from 3pm to 9pm, and Saturday, October 6 in the Angel Suite, Exchange Place, Brigg, from 10am to 4pm. A supplier day for local businesses is to be held on Friday, October 12, between 9am and 1pm, at Forest Pines Hotel.
