NORTH Lincolnshire businesses are finding strength in numbers through a new network for local companies.

Since its launch in January the North Lincolnshire Business Network (NLBN) has helped dozens of local firms with free networking opportunities and advice sessions to help the local economy bounce back from the recession.

The network, which is overseen by North Lincolnshire Council and the North Lincolnshire Strategic Partnership, organises monthly events for local companies, as well as seeking out new opportunities for businesses.

Emma Sparling, business manager at Scunthorpe consultancy company Page Consulting Ltd, said: "It's never been more imperative for local businesses to come together and show a united front to battle the terrible effects of recession.

"We've been a part of the network since it was first launched and it's been a revelation to us, my only surprise is that more businesses haven't got involved.

"It's certainly a case of the more the merrier – each new business that comes on board can bring something new to the organisation. One of the great things about the network is the diverse range of businesses on board, and hopefully with more companies joining that will continue to grow."

Meetings held by the NLBN feature keynote speakers as well as "speed-networking" sessions, in which company leaders can discuss potential partnerships and business links.

Page Consultancy has already delivered a presentation to the network on Business Model Environment (BME) and has benefited from the advice of other local companies.

Emma said: "In business you are always learning and having business experts with a knowledge of the local economy helping each other out is a great asset.

"Through the meetings we've already forged a vital contact who we wouldn't have met otherwise, and is already helping us to generate new business."

Each meeting of the NLBN also hosts a short slot for a local business to make a presentation about its goods and services on offer and to help businesses raise their profiles among the local community.

Andrea Littlewood, director of Barnetby-based human resources company HR Department, said the network was already proving a vital resource for local firms.

She said: "It's extremely beneficial to everyone involved. To be able to build new business links in the local area is a great opportunity for both individual companies and the local economy.

"Our business has already made a lot of useful contacts from the local area which will hopefully generate some exciting opportunities in the future. The monthly sessions also host guest speakers who have proved very successful so far."

The organisation is also offering access to an online business network. To join, search for Marcus Walker, head of strategic regeneration, housing and development, at www.linkedin.com
