FEWER motorists are breaking the speed limit in North Lincolnshire thanks to a clampdown by police.

Though more than 7,000 speeding offences are recorded in the region each year, there was a reduction from 7,732 offences in 2008/09 to 7,181 offences in 2009/10.

PC Barry Gardner, casualty reduction officer for Humberside Police, said: "An awful lot has been done to try to reduce the number of motorists exceeding the speed limit.

"A combination of engineering, education and enforcement has been used to get motorists to drive at appropriate speeds."

BMW drivers are the worst speeding culprits in North Lincolnshire – they were snapped breaking the limit most often according to information obtained by the Scunthorpe Telegraph under the Freedom of Information Act.

One motorist was clocked at 137mph in the last year.

"It's an excessively high speed," said Pc Gardner. "A car may well be capable of that speed and more but I would question the capabilities of the driver.

"If a car doing 70mph pulled out to overtake it would be like hitting a brick wall at 67mph. You wouldn't be anticipating the speed of the other car."

Offenders who only marginally broke the limit could attend a speed awareness course, but most opted to pay a fixed penalty.

Pete Scott, head of safer roads at North Lincolnshire Council, said: "Courses are very effective for low level offenders, but there are always drivers whose speed is so excessive only heavy fines and penalty points on their licence will have any deterrent effect."

“Ermine Street or rather suicide alley as it is known locally these days, the police should have a stronger presence on this road and I mean at Corus start and throwing out time in particular not just at random times during the day. The amount of morons that speed in excess of 70mph and overtake across every junction is unbelieveable along with all the cretins that come off the 1077 and leave the left indicator merrily ticking away all the way to Appleby but never turn off the road. The world is full of them and 75% must live around here and the other 25% must be gulls.”

“If they spent as much time and money catching the youths on their motorcycles, driving around the estates. No crash helmets, no insurance, licence MOT and even under age. Then the streets would be safer. Yes Motorists speed, but the majority is only a fraction over the limit. At least most are fully legal on the roads. If your caught fair and square for being 20% over the limit, then in a built up area, you deserve points and fines. On a straight motorway common sense and facts should play a part in mitigating circumstances. A modern car creeps over the 70mph far too easy these days. Doesnt make the driver a bad person, or a criminal. Its the ones who blatantly flount the limits that should be punished.
I think the police should envest more in catching real criminals personally”

    “What a load of crap.
I have the figures in front of me from the most recent speed checks on Appleby Lane, Broughton and Ermine Street, Broughton.
Ermine Street - Average of 5651 vehicles per day 27.8% of whom were travelling at over 36mph. 1018 were travelling at between 507 at between 40-50 mph and 48 a day at 50-60 mph.
Appleby Lane - Average of 2394 per day. 1425 a day were travelling at over 36mph. 584 per day were travelling at 36-40 mph. 681 per day at 40-50 mph and 87 per day at 50-60 mph.
I live on Appleby Lane! I am constantly waving at idiots to slow down driving at 60-70 mph on Appleby Lane!”

“The fact that nearly all accidents occur within the posted limits is inconvenient and therefore ignored or actively supressed by those riding a very comfortable gravy train harrasing motorists. "Speed enforcement "is just another politically correct big government con.”

“We need to watch ourselves now as the loss in police profit (and thats what it is) from their cash cow motorist will result in even more fines cameras etc (they have got a business to run)
Got fined £60 quid for a brake light being out the other day no get it fixed, no rectification notice (7 days to get fixed and get slip stamped at an MOT station) nothing
    Just wanted my cash
You have been warned the shortfall will have to come from somewhere and not many "proper criminals" have the cash so the motorist will be an even easier target”
