A GOOGLE Street View car is now taking pictures in rural North Lincolnshire.

The hi-tech van, mounted with special cameras that stitches together panoramic photographs of an area, was spotted by residents in Scawby and in Winterton.

One furious Scawby resident, who asked not to be named, said he wanted pictures of his property to be removed from the site because he was concerned that thieves would be able to use the tool to target his property.

He said: "I'm a bit concerned about it because my Land Rover was parked on my drive and it could attract thieves.

"I have been involved with Land Rovers for more than 50 years and I know they have interchangeable parts. They are like Meccano – you can swap parts about so easily.

"I'm concerned about my vehicle – it's my pride and joy."

Just last month, the Google website launched its Street View service focusing on Scunthorpe and 24 cities in the UK.

John Parton (64) of Meadow Vale, Scawby, believes people should be informed when the Google car is taking photographs of their area.

He said: "I think Google shouldn't have a blanket remit, they should have to get permission from the Local Authority."

“Now, Google's has finally added there street view images to Google maps.

But in Lincolnshire we've had street view images for some time now. A local web site called "SeeLincolnshire" has been offering 360 street view images for nearly a year now, and there not just our streets, they're places of interest like our parks, museums and events.

Ok, It's fun to see people falling off their pushbikes as the Google car drivers past. But the resolution is so pour and is it going to be like the Arial images, only updated every four or five year.

Google Street View, for me it's Ok, but just OK. It's there and I'll use it but it's not quite good enough to get excited about.”

“I prefer the Lego 'Lexus' or even the Duplo 'Daewoo'.
For me, the Meccano Landrover just aint classy enough, or worthy of a google photo-shoot.
Seriously though, I think google street view is absolutely fine.”

by Birds Eye View Maps on Google, Gives Thieves More Info

    Friday, April 10 2009, 11:03PM

“From what I have viewed on Google Street View I would be more worried about the birds eye view maps of all areas they do as they show full layout of properties and getaway routes, Street View is no worse than your house for sale pictures in estate agents windows, if they really want what you have they will look it out and take it as no law and order enforced in Britain and those who claim to be law abiding people are often breaking the law almost every day in some way or another.”

“I think Google street view is rather cool. Although kids should not be shown on there with or without faces being blurred out. Material objects are at danger of all sorts but can be replaced just as easily. I recently found out that streetview was in Australia and looked up my cousins home.It was cool as I will possibly never get to see it otherwise.I could not just see his house but also the neighbourhood he was in. It was a pretty posh area with massive houses and big expensive cars as well.I wonder if people are freaking out down there too about Mr Thief nicking their cars.”

“What a bunch of pancake throwers. If the camera can see it from the street, so can mister robber guy. Wake up, smell the coffee, stop being a twonk. Stop blaming new technology for your own paranoia. And the lady who's worried about her kids - wrap them up in cotton wool and hide them from the world. But paedolphiles know how to find photos of kids in what to them are interesting poses - they aren't going to waste time looking on Google Earth for a glimsp of your fully dressed kids playing on your front drive! Or do you send your kids out starkers???”
