LAST night's transfer deadline passed without Scunthorpe United bringing in a new face to Glanford Park.

But it was not for the want of trying for manager Nigel Adkins.

He knows his squad is paper thin up front while striker Garry Thompson is ruled out for the next six weeks with a groin strain.

But he knows too that he needs to keep faith with the squad of players he already has.

That's why he finds it difficult to give a guarantee of regular first team football for any young Premier League player he looks to bring in on a temporary basis.

It was only the window for permanent transfers that closed last night until January.

The window for loan transfers opens again before United return to action at home to Bristol City a week on Saturday.

Adkins wants to give a chance to the younger members of his squad to develop.

That includes Bobby Grant who joined the club the summer from Accrington Stanley.

Grant scored for United Reserves in their 3-1 victory at Middlesbrough yesterday in the totesport.com Cup.

He equalised by netting the rebound after a shot from Martyn Woolford had come back off the post.

Trent McLenahan and Mattie Godden added the others.

“We have a squad of 25 players. Before the season started the PODs said they were not good enough - so what is it to be more players or better players?
At least the glass bone dry brigade have stopped blaming NA, but I guess that is only a temporary lull.”

“Time for the board to back the manager,to keep us in this league,(not asking to break the bank).Five years of improvements on the pitch and no improvements off it ,hope the happy clappers hang their heads in shame in years to come when our success has not been mirrowed with ground impovement and backing from our board.Where is the money all going year after year you might well ask ? "UP THE IRON !!!”

“We need to leave Nige to it, because to be fair when is the last time he let us down???? We are not gonna be Championship contenders over night, but i'm sure Nige has a plan for progression otherwise he wouldn't be wasting his time if he felt he could not take us further!”

“So what's new, 11 players out since last season, and 5 new players in !!!

And many of our outgoing players were mostly our clubs top earners.

Before the happy clapper brigade come on here bleating about them not wanting the club to spend beyond their means, all of us genuine supporters just want the club to invest a fraction of incomings in making the squad big enough and good enough to stay in the Championship.

I beleive that we have about £6.5 million from the football league a TV rights, £2 million profit from the Hooper sale, another £250,000 from the Man Utd match, so wouldn't it be nice if the supporters were rewarded by the club investing a small amount of cash in the very thin squad.

The team is doing great on the pitch, but there is nothing coming from the direction of the directors box.

No one is acking the club to overspend, no one is asking our Chirman to contribute a fraction of his vast £50,000,000 fortune towards building a new stand at Glandford Park, no one is asking for a new electronic score board that would be readable, no one is asking for the support beams of the stads to be modified so that season ticket holders can see the game without straining of necks in order to partially see what is happening. All we ask is that the club make a small amount of money available that could improve and strengthen our present squad.

YOU KNOW, LIKE OTHER GLUBS DO!!”

“Without reverting to my expected and rant there is a happy medium instead of this intense uber prudence.

We need basic investment in the team to allow us to stay in the NPC and at the moment we have a frail squad in midfield and up front and should we get any significant injuries who can we call upon?

We have a solid and over manned defence but take out two strikers through knocks and two midfield and we are in serious doo doo.

I don't advocate spending all of the £8.4m we have, I know where that needs spending but we have £175k plus for the Man U game, surely that would have better been allocated for a loanee or two to come here long term.

This money now will be used (hopefully) to secure the full time services of Nolan and McNulty but surely that would have been allocated at the start of the season.”

“Eddie - constructive comments about maximising revenue streams you can keep on making until someone actually listens that's fine. All the other moaners who seem to expect that Wharton should just keep spending "his childrens inheritance " as a certain Dragon would say, need to have a reality check.
People on here keep trotting out that we must be earning £8m or so this year- that 's revenue. However they should know already the club was budgetted to lose money, without transfer profits and has to prepare for putting seats in the Donny road end. Where is the money for that or any ground expansion going to come from?
    Then there's next years loss!

As for the last 2 results have seen off new signings I suppose you would have said exactly the same if they had been defeats instead.

I listened to Whelan, Gold and Hearn all club chairmen on the radio last night, a pertinent question they answered was are the directors taking a salary from their football clubs? Are ours - they were'nt!”

“How often has this "don't worry, the loan window opens in a bit" story been written? Every single transfer window? Does the ET have it ready to cut and paste, merely updating the key information? I believe that NA has been trying to add to the squad, but we have to look at the reasons why were are repeatedly unable to and address those reasons. If it's a money/wages issue, then are the club doing everything in their power to maximise every revenue stream available to them? I've banged on about this before, but there is still no evidence that they are actually doing anything.”

“Did anyone actually expect any different? Any hope we had of strengthening the squad disappeared with the last 2 results.
I don't know who NA is trying to kid if he believes there are no players available from the PL who could improve the side.
Sometimes Nigel, you would be better not saying anything rather than trotting out the usual "we did try" garbage that no one believes. We all know that the Board are playing Russian Roulette with our Championship survival by doing it on the cheap.”
