Hopkinson's Scunthorpe indoor bowls trio crowned champions

JOHN Hopkinson's Scunthorpe team have become the first indoor bowls league winners of the season as they cannot now be beaten in the race for the Veteran Triples Division Three title.

They are 11 points clear of Roy Janney's team.

It proved to be a difficult encounter for John Morrell's squad against the team of George Matchett.

The latter surged into an early lead of 14 shots to two at the halfway stage, before the Morrell rink clawed their way back to only five shots adrift.

However the ends started to run out and Matchett's team took the victory, 18-11.

It's all change in Division One, with Gordon Dobbs' side taking over at the top, one point clear of Dave Saxby's team.

Pat Lowe's squad comfortably controlled their match against Heather Mackfall's team. They charged into an early 10-1 lead and went on to win 19-10.

Division Two sees Trevor Smith's team sitting in the top spot, with Pat Whittingham's side two points behind.

It was a very close finish when third-placed Roy Tuplin's team faced that of Meg Gall, the side just below them in the table.

The latter set off well, developing an early 7-1 lead, but Tuplin's team produced some excellent bowls to claw it back to 12-9.

It was all systems go for both teams in the final end, but Gall's team held their nerve to secure a 12-10 victory.

Midweek Triple Division One has John Hopkinson's team three points ahead of Trevor Smith's side, who have played two games more.

There was a dramatic finish when John Painter's team faced up to that of Shirley Burnett.

The Burnett trio came from 10-3 down to 12-7 with two ends left to play, then scored four shots on the penultimate end to go just a single shot behind.

There was some quality play from both teams on the final end, but the Burnett side scored a single shot to secure a welcome 12-12 draw.

There is no change in Division Two, with Warwick Wooldridge's team established in first place and Joan Bolton's team three points behind.

Keith Dobbs' trio came from behind to win 11-10 in a tense match with Roy Janney's team.

The Division Three table has Arthur Hewitt's team leading the pack, six points clear of John Parrott's team.

Tony Pollard's team clinically controlled their match with John Roope's side, winning 20-9.
