SCUNTHORPE United manager Ian Baraclough fuelled speculation linking the Iron with Bristol Rovers striker Will Hoskins when he declined to distance himself from rumours in the media.

United are reported to have had a bid turned down for the 24-year-old, who has bagged 11 goals this season for the League One strugglers.

He only joined them this summer after being freed by Watford, following three and a half unsuccessful seasons at Vicarage Road.

Hoskins ticks all the right boxes in the Iron's striker search.

He is young, hungry to climb back up the football ladder and is unlikely to command a big fee.

"I will neither confirm or deny the speculation that is out," said Baraclough.

"Will Hoskins is someone who I have admired now for a few years.

"He is doing very well at League One level with Bristol Rovers.

"I am sure he is a player who will interest other clubs, not just us."

A Bristol-based source said a deal could be in the offing, partly because of Rovers' financial position.

"Hoskins is too good for this level," said the source.

"He has scored 11 goals in a struggling team.

"He is not the biggest player, only about five feet nine tall. But he is skilful, has good movement and has great finishing ability.

"Rovers are desperate for cash – they have no money.

"I am sure there will be more clubs than Scunthorpe looking at him.

"Derby County are also believed to be interested."

“This could well be the latest Eastwood/Nugent.”

“I see from the Bristol local rag that we have put in an offer, an offer so derisory Rovers laughed at it before it was rejected out of hand.

Why do we embarrass ourselves so much with arm chancing figures. Either we want him or we don't.

UNHAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL ON HERE. EXPECT MORE OF THE SAME FROM WHARTON TOWERS IN THE NEXT 12 MONTHS.”
