NATIONAL Road Safety Week began on Monday which aims to raise awareness of road safety.

To mark the annual event the fire service has joined forces with the Safer Roads Humber Partnership and North Lincolnshire Council to host a number of hard-hitting events within the local community.

Nick Granger, service delivery manager for the fire service in North Lincolnshire, hopes the campaign will make a real impact.

"As a member of the Fire Service our main life saving role is no longer rescuing people from burning buildings but saving casualties from road traffic collisions," he said.

"The statistics relating to road collisions are horrifying.

"Everyday 10 people in the UK die on our roads and males under the age of 25 have the same life expectancy in their first six months of driving as an American G.I. landing on the beaches of Normandy.

"In North Lincolnshire there are a number of high speed rural roads and therefore our officers have to deal with a number of high impact collisions where cars have hit each other with a combined speed of 120 or 140 mph."

Throughout Road Safety Week a crashed car and moped, sponsored by BDV Recovery, will be on display outside Scunthorpe Fire Station as a stark reminder of how collisions can devastate lives.
