'Important not to pay out stupid money' - United boss Baraclough

THE biggest lesson manager Ian Baraclough learned during the January transfer window was not to panic.

"The chairman and board have been very supportive in the amount of players I have brought in," said the Scunthorpe United boss.

"I think that is what all fans would want us to do.

"They will have seen we are trying our hardest to stay in this division.

"We are still well in the mix to catch eight or nine teams.

"No-one here has given up the ghost."

United had several bids for players turned down before doing most of their business in the second half of the month.

"There were some good bids and that showed me there is support there for me and that the club is trying as much as it can," said Baraclough.

"If we feel they are the right players we will pay good money for them.

"But there is a fine line between paying good money for someone and paying stupid money that is not warranted really, even though it is January.

"It is important not to make a panic buy or panic loan just for the sake of bringing a body in.

"The loan market opens again next week and that gives an opportunity still to bring someone else in.

"Just because the January window is closed does not mean we have stopped looking to try to strengthen the squad still further."

“All i see wrong with your side is that you hav'nt got a proven goal scorer at this level. I dont know why your manager does'nt try to loan simpson or folan off us for the rest of the season, i beleive they would be available and even more so to a local side who need abit of help. Good luck today.”

“Think we'll do well to get a point, to be honest. Hull are on a good run, we're on a shocker, and we're especially bad at home. We've brought a lot of players in, but they'll take time to gel, and when you look at the money spent by both sides, there's no comparison. That said, if we're ever going to get another win at home this season, knowing us it won't be against the likes of Preston, it'll be against a team that are on a great run.”

“What's your predictions for tommorows game? 2-1 to the tigers i think. Im not sure what to make of your team to be honest so i think it will be a close game, fryatt and mclean to score.”

“sid, the point is that ever since N/A left the players have gone from bad to worse, look at the bristol game we was all over them but scoring was not on the cards that day and to be honest since either. N/A sold the club to most of them then buggerd off, you don't go from the sort of form we was showing to the garbbage we was getting like when we played Leeds or Donny, unless there is unrest or upset in the dressing room, N/A will be a footballing god around here for a long time to come,Barra is not likely to achivie what N/A did but he may come close ( well here's hoping). i don't see us getting 25 points from are last11 but we need them i try to be optimistic when it comes to scunny as if you aren't you just become a misreble old fart”

“P.Doff.- please read others posts more carefully.
Only I know how extremely low my expectations were, and I can say that the signings were better than I, yes I, expected.
Of course you can't judge them yet and that's not what I said. Like you, I have no idea if they will turn out be good acquisitions.”

“Mark scunny...12 home games have yielded 6 points and a paltry 9 goals and you see us getting 25 points from 11!......Have I missed something, did we sign Torres, Messi, Van der Vaart, Gerrard and Rooney in January?

    Admire your optimism!!!”

“Rumour is £350k Wooly, £125k Forte, the signings are about I would say £250k so that leaves £225k so add the £600k of the Sammon offer before Forte and Wooly deals were done then we must have just short of a million left in the kitty.

So when the club reports the already muted loss of 500k (this despite the Hooper fee and this season's £6m Central League fund) in addition to the dramatic wage bill reduction but offset against loss in revenue due to perception of commitment then it is impossible to take a snapshot of where the club is at.”

“Duffy, Nelson and Reid had transfer fees attached. Wooly and Forte realised money. Any idea on the balance PDoff ?

Overall Bara has done a good job with a high degree of pragmatism.

Lets see what the outcome is. May be two more trips to Wembley next season.”

“come on people at least give the new lads a chance, they hav'ent even kicked aball at G.P. yet and you are pulling them down, we have 11 games at G.P. left we need 25 points from them plus a few from away games its going to be hard but if the new lads settle in fast you never know. I just hope there's more fight in them than whats been on show of late. the problem as been N/A leaving most of the older lads have not fully got over him leaving and they aren't fully supporting Barra yet. lets hope that with the new lads this will change. well if nobody else is willing to give them a chace i for 1 am UTI”

“I'd not heard of any of them and I'll be angling for a team sheet tomorrow -not that this means anything, it's usually 20 monutes in before I even know who the opposition is.

Forte scored a hat trick at Notts Co but then struggled...the cheap option would have been to keep Hayes in the summer IMO.

Lets hope thingymebob and wotshisface strike up a good partnership - who knows, might be another Cammack/Broddle forward line!

    Up the Iron!”
