SCUNTHORPE United are set to celebrate 15 years of an overseas supporters' club by holding an Irish Iron day later this month.

The match against Plymouth Argyle at Glanford Park on Saturday, March 20, will be marked with a variety of Irish-themed activities.

Members of the 87-strong supporters' club will make the trip across the Irish Sea to be at the game, while the day will also honour the contribution made by Irish players to the club's recent success.

Irish Iron secretary Bernard Griffin, 45, who lives in County Donegal, said:"It is a great honour for us and for our Irish players that the club would do this for us.

"Irish Iron was founded by me 15 years ago and was just me for the first few years.

"I sponsored bits of players kit and matchballs early on but this year we raised over £1,500 for the club.

"I'm proud of the fact every single year we've managed to donate more than the previous year."

Mr Griffin said he hoped the supporters' club would continue to grow in numbers.

He said: "For the future, I'm hoping that the publicity surrounding Irish Iron day will help us recruit more members so that we can raise more money for the Club, as that's what we exist for."

To mark the occasion, the group has produced 100 commemorative Irish Iron Day t-shirts, which the players will warm up in before the match.

The remainder will be sold to fans, with £1 from every £5 t-shirt going to the Help For Heroes charity.
