Is Scunthorpe town centre in crisis?
HMV, which has a shop there, has just gone into administration.
-

And there are fears about what will happen if the new retail park, including Marks and Spencer, goes ahead on the outskirts of town.

“Do you think 100 years ago they reported the demise of the horse and cart and the advent of the motorcar with the same negative outpourings as the demise of the town centre and popularity of internet shopping they do today? Maybe it is nobody's "Fault" and just normal progress, Will we in, say 40 years time wonder if people actually left their homes to go shopping and laugh about it.....Just a thought.”

“Given Scunthorpe's self evident and long standing predicament as a failing town; perhaps if over many years, successive Labour dominated Scunthorpe councils had got their priorities in the right order.
And fought for £tens of millions of tax payers/public money to be invested and targetted at Scunthorpe's and its town centre infrastructure, economy, businesses AND jobs.
Rather than Labour's typically hyped up profligacy of a £37 million spend on the Pods, replacing a 25 year old servicable town centre Leisure Centre; £1.2 million on the Club 2000/Church Square fiasco; £15 million on the questionable need for another entertainment venue on top of the Plowright!!??
Notwithstanding that in one of its final acts, the previous Labour run NLC orchestrated and committed £7.5 million from council budgets in a less than "open and transparent"- at the time a so called commercially sensitive and confidential - secret 15 year deal with SMG to run the Baths!!??
And there are those who talk of the Tory mismanagement of NLC being responsible for Scunthorpe's woes! What, when the conservatives are only into their 6th year of controlling NLC since its inception in 1996!! Before that, I am told Labour dominated Scunthorpe Borough councils since time began!!
Only in Scunthorpe!!”
