A JOBS fair is to be held to help people affected by the proposed closure of the town's Kimberly-Clark plant.

The event, organised by North Lincolnshire Council and JobCentre Plus, will be at the Falkland Way factory on Tuesday, January 22 from 5pm to 8pm.

The nappy-making plant is due to close in 2013, with the loss of around 480 jobs.

The new employer open day will allow employees to showcase themselves to potential employers.

A task force was set up soon after the proposed closure was announced in October, aimed at finding alternative employment for workers.

It is chaired by Councillor Liz Redfern, leader of North Lincolnshire Council.

She said: "We are working very closely with Kimberly-Clark to see how we can generate job opportunities for everybody who may lose their job in the new year.

"This event is hopefully going to get people into work.

"It is now vital that employees have as many avenues back into work or opportunities for retraining as possible."

The open day will give Kimberly-Clark employees a chance to discuss current vacancies or opportunities which may be coming up with potential new employers.

Ted Plaziuk, chairman of the Barton Chamber of Trade, said he hoped the event would help the workers.

He said: "It brings people together and it can do no harm, but I don't know what other opportunities are out there.

"If you can match people up with companies, something might spark off and there might be something employers could take up.

"Job vacancies are not far and wide but you have got to admire the effort of the task force."

Barton MP Martin Vickers also said he thought the open day would be beneficial.

He said: "People feel a bit depressed and down when these things happen and the natural reaction is to think things won't work.

"But the JobCentre Plus people have got considerable experience in dealing with major closures over the years and they can tailor natural people skills with work available.

"It is an initiative which is deserving of support and very welcome."

The latest available figures show 62 vacancies at the Barton JobCentre Plus office in November.

Kimberly-Clark announced its closure plans for the Barton site because of increasing market pressures. The closure is part of a proposal to stop both the manufacturing and selling of products across most of Europe.

Kimberly-Clark representatives were unavailable for comment.

“Setting up a jobs fair ,Total waste of time and money just going through the motions , As for job center plus just send you to agency and then back to work scheme good money for those running them . As stated before i know of one young man who got job information from job center-plus about short time job six weeks contract promised and sent of to agency who also stated six weeks biked in rain to work every day but after six days was told he was not needed any more as job was really only for six days holiday cover for one of their workers ,But if ever a full time job came up they would be happy to employ him through agency . He complained at job center plus about been promised six weeks work and was told there was nothing they could do as agency's where not governed by works an pensions , regulations need to be set in place , And as for fast track back on to benefit that also failed took weeks before this man received any benefits. The best thing would be to limit the amount of EU migrant workers entering the country till our own people where employed . And let job center plus give out all the jobs close the agency's or put them under strict regulations .”

“HR_Man. My apologies, so you are probably/or were an Employment Pimp then or would you like to give us all an explanation of HR (Human Resources) Man?”

“Mozart, I am not a Civil Servant, don't make up facts to embellish your story. How do I know how many have full time appointments - because we contacted them to ask them how they were doing and if they needed any further assistance!”

“HR_Man 70% indeed and how do you know that? You cannot account for people who get short term jobs through agencies (employment pimps) as they will have signed off. People like you are just paper shufflers waiting for the day you can get your "gold-plated" civil service pension whilst many in industries that created the wealth of this country have seen theirs stolen or plundered by Gordon Brown.”

“What's a sodding job fair going to achieve? You may as well go to an antiques fair and hopefully come away with something you want or what is of value to you. Can the S.T find out how many job seekers attend the jobs fair and compare the figure to actually how many appropriate job vacancies are offered? All this is, is another way for training firms and possibly agencies to extract government (tax payer) funding to suit and support their own businesses and interests (making money out. It makes me wonder how this country made it over the past 60 years before all these universities / colleges / training organisations and agencies got their way into society. Also out of the 60 odd jobs on offer at the Barton job centre could some one actually state what type of jobs these were. Were they full time (40hr plus) jobs with wages above the minimum wage (£6.80 - £12.00 ph) jobs. Or were most of them part time temporary contract type jobs on minimum type wage and possibly involved greater travel from your home region?”

“Please don't be so negative. Having organised one of these events towards the end of last year I can honestly say that they do work as long as people are prepared to put the effort in.

Over 70% of attendees at our event found a new job or training course. Only those who did not want to take part found out the hard way what it was like to be unemployed.

Keep an open mind, prepare a decent CV and look the part. I for one will be there with Jobs available for the right people but I am not going to give them away just because someone is being made redundant.”

“The jobs fair will consist of a room full of newspaper & trade magazines job sections most of which are advertising jobsmiles away and totally unsuitable for most of those made redundant with a few staff from the job centre to try and give advice (which they havn't a clue about) which isn't their fault by the way and at the end of the day it will be a complete waste of time. Sorry to sound cynical but been there, done that and got the tee-shirt!”
