"Also, as far as Scunthorpe not being romantic... I would have you know that I proposed to my wife on Valentine's Day in the Maldives over a candlelight dinner on the beach, and we got married in 2011 on Matamanoa Island in Fiji, again on the beach, whilst completing round the world trip.

"Romance is definitely not dead in Scunthorpe!"

Meanwhile, a North Lincolnshire firm claims to have come up with the ultimate Valentine’s tonic for sweet-toothed sweethearts.

Choc Au Vin - a mouth-watering mix of red wine and chocolate - is the brainwave of Ron and Margaret Edgar and their son Matt.

Together they run the Waddingham-based company called MarRon Wine, Cider and Liquers.

Ron said: “We had tested a chocolate wine two years ago but thought we could do better.

“After several months we came up with our current recipe, blending the same coco extract with wine. Now we offer red, white and rose Choc Au Vin varieties.

"It’s a perfect Valentine’s Day gift as it has a luxurious taste. the flavour of red wine perfectly matching the dark chocolate, It’s the best of both worlds. We think shoppers will love trying something different."

Choc Au Vin has gone on sale at retail outlets through the region. including the Pink Pink. Holme. Uncle Henry’s, Kirton-In-Lindsey, and Lincolnshire Co-op foodstores, excluding Messingham.

The Edgars even arrange home-tasting visits and personally-designed labels for less than £4 a bottle.

They are also proud of their Lincolnshire roots and support other local businesses by buying their bottles from Grimsby, the labels from Caistor and the packaging from Grantham.
