KIND-hearted Rotarians from North Lincolnshire are providing a vital lifeline to the victims of the devastating Pakistan floods.

Members of the Barton Rotary Club have sent 2,000 LifeStraws to the country where thousands of people have been left homeless in the wake of the natural disaster.

LifeStraws are an innovative piece of equipment which filters dirty water, making it clean and safe to drink.

David Lee, of Barton Rotary Club, explained how the device saves lives.

"Costing £2 each, the LifeStraws are used to suck-up contaminated water from rivers and streams.

"The filters within the small plastic tube remove any dirt, making the water safe to drink.

"Waterborne diseases are also prevented, making their use ideal for children."

Rotary Clubs across the UK have now sent more than one million LifeStraws to Pakistan, where water supply is one of the main problems since the devastating flooding.

And Rotarians in Pakistan are working together to help in the distribution of this lifesaving equipment.

Mr Lee said the Barton branch of the international organisation have also donated another shelter box to survivors in Pakistan.

"ShelterBoxes contain a tent, water purifying and cooking equipment and all that is needed for a family of up to ten people to live for many months.

"A large number of these have already been sent to provide living accommodation for displaced people in Pakistan.

"The cost of a shelter box is £490 and it was covered mainly by donations from local people to the Barton Rotary Club."

“I have a pay-as-you go mobile phone, I received a text from Orange asking if they could deduct £2.50 from my credit for this relief fund. I choose who to donate my hard earned cash to, not others. I haven't noticed the Chinese 'cap in hand', they just get on with it.”

“All child benefit could be reduced by 25% and income tax increased by 5% to support those in Pakistan who are dying in the horrible floods, that should help support those that failed to make into Britain for a good life, I have lived in areas where there are a high consentration of pakistani residents, they are not short of money, let them sell the streets of houses they own and rent out so they can support their homeland.”
