HUNDREDS of sacked workers at Total Lindsey Oil Refinery will have to wait until tomorrow for talks to resume between union officials and lead contractors on the site.

It comes as protesters were warned to "dig in" for a long-term dispute and reassured a £100,000 hardship fund had been set up by one union.

As reported on www.thisisscunthorpe.co.uk representatives of Shaw and Jacobs – the former employers of the majority of the 647 dismissed workers – met with union bosses in London yesterday to try to resolve the conflict.

Talks have now been adjourned until Thursday.

Yesterday, more than 1,000 demonstrators from across the country converged on the Total Lindsey Oil Refinery to support the sacked protesters.

The workers, many coming from areas including Hull, Leeds and Chesterfield, were told bosses were set to get round the negotiating table with Jacobs, the main contractor on the hydro-desulphurisation plant.

As reported, 647 contractors were dismissed following a series of unofficial strikes at the plant. The contractors had objected to 51 sub-contractors being made redundant – something they said they were promised in February would not happen to British workers as long as foreign labour was used on the site.

Thousands of workers, from Wales to Scotland, walked out in support of the North Lincolnshire workers yesterday.

“Its making a stand , British workers losing out in all types of jobs, Politicians withholding some facts we dont need to know , Under certain conditions EU companys employing workers from EU can pay worker what they like , Then after a time these workers can claim and get wages made up out of tax payers money, That a way of bringing down wages making the rich companys richer and the workers poorer”

“The more I hear and read about this dispute the more I am convinced that it has very little to do with the 51 Redundancies and more to do with the trade unions trying to reinstate their power over firms by blackmailing them into sumission with unofficial strikes. Why did not the redundant workers apply to the other contractor for a job as contract labour has done for many years when one contractors work starts to finish and another contractor is setting on in all my years working for a contractor this was normal proceedure a contractor cannot carry on employing tradesmen for whom they have no work and why blame LOR as they do not directly emoploy the labour involved. If the workers on LOR are not careful the project which I understand is already six months behind and a lot of money over budget will close down resulting in many more contractors out of work or is this the unions aim? When will the unions learn they no longer have the power they once held and concentrate on keeping their members in employment and not jepodising hundred of jobs with illegal strikes as I feel sure LOR and their Contractors will have checked the legallities involved in dismissing all the illegal strikers prior to doing so and the decision will not have been taken lightly and the unions could finish up having to order their members back to work having lost money or face losing the contracts to further foreign companies”
