SCUNTHORPE Men lost to a strong Stamford team in their fourth match in the Lincolnshire County Men's League.

Second-placed Stamford arrived at Scunthorpe in a confident mood after beating their opponents 16-2 in the reverse fixture back in November.

And the visitors settled the quickest, developing an early overall lead of 24 shots to 15.

By the halfway stage, Stamford had extended their lead to 53-35.

The home team started to get a foothold in the match and three-quarters of the way through the score stood at 80-75 with Scunthorpe starting to apply the pressure.

However, Stamford, although a little nervous, managed to fend off the late resurgence to take the victory by 12 points to six (99 to 92 shots).

The quartet of Gordon Bissett, Norman Anderson, Dennis Rhodes and Paul Grimbleby staged a remarkable recovery to come from 13-4 down to win 22-15.

John Rayner, Peter Bennett, Steve Redhead and Ray Robinson won eight of the last 11 ends to run out 20-17 winners.

Bill Hutson, Tony Hebblewhite, Len Lammas and Jim Davidson edged a close encounter 23-21.

Ian Pringle, Steven Carr, Rob Skinner and Steve Burton kept the scores level early on, but were unable to hang on in a 20-15 defeat.

The final Scunthorpe quartet of Vinny Bolton, John Downs, Neil Rowe and Phil Boulton were always fighting off the back foot and lost 26-12.
