PEOPLE living on the Isle of Axholme have called for action to be taken to stop yobs breaking into supermarket food bins and discarding litter and detritus across an Isle town.

In a bid to win the war against waste, Tesco has tightened security on its out-of-date food bins stored at the back of its premises in Crowle's High Street.

The call came as over past 18 months, youths have been seen climbing over a wooden fence and pulling open the bins to fill carrier bags full of the rotten contents.

Witnesses described seeing them carry the bags, tipping out items such as coleslaw, chocolate cake and croissants along neighbouring streets and the churchyard.

And with the recent £3 million investment spent on regenerating the town, its residents wanted Tesco to put an end to the mess misery.

Dave Till, caretaker of the churchyard on Vicar's Walk, said: "Youngsters have been climbing over the fence to get to the skips at the back of Tesco for food from its bakery. "They take the items and go have a party because cream cakes and empty bottles of vodka have been left at the side of the seats in the churchyard.

"Chocolate eclairs were laid around – it was a mess.

"We have also had the specially made St George's flag ripped off the church.

"We've tried to tie it up but they keep ripping it. They also play football around the back."

A spokeswoman for Humberside Police said: "We were called at 12.49am. Officers attended but nobody was seen.

"The neighbourhood officer for the area has been made aware of the incident and will be dealing with it accordingly."

A Tesco spokesman added: "We're committed to being a good neighbour. The bins are now secured with padlocks and we are cooperating closely with the local police on this issue."

by TAX WASTE FOOD THROWN OUT, BY SUPERMARKETS TO STOP IT

    Saturday, July 31 2010, 4:06PM

“We have seen TV programs where shop skips are raided for perfectly good food that is thrown out, I suggest they have to declare all items wasted with their shelf value, any wasted should be taxed at 25% of shelf value to cut such waste.
A lot of food reaching sell by date would then be sold very cheap to the poor who can not afford to pick and choose what they eat, or is the truth the so called poor are not the real poor people but those who expect to have the same as rich people by over spending on credit cards.”
