Loans are key to improving Scunthorpe United fortunes upfront
A turnaround in Scunthorpe United's fortunes will almost certainly depend on what business they do in the loan transfer window.
Manager Alan Knill admits it is proving a 'struggle' with such a small squad and is looking to bring in more than one new recruit when the window opens on Saturday.

Mike Grella who has scored the only league goal so far for Mike Grella
He is confident of doing at least part of that business before the weekend.
"I hope they're high," he said when asked of the chances of having a new face in time for Saturday's home game with Sheffield United.

"It's not one, we need more than one. We need a few players.
"We've got players coming in and training with us today (Thursday), but we're also looking because we need some players on loan.
"Then hopefully we'll look a lot stronger and a lot healthier.
"I've got to say we're looking at all areas at the top of the pitch, wide areas as well.
"We all know we need a striker, and I think we need two, but obviously finding two strikers that are going to score goals and for the price we're going to pay, that's quite difficult.
"If we can't do that, then we'll just have to try to find one.
"I think we need some strengthening around that, like wide players, some more pace and more power.
"I've got to be honest, it's a struggle at the moment. We've got nothing to really change it.
"It's something we have to put up with.
"We knew what it was going to be like this season, and we knew the expectation levels are so high here. But it's changed. Things have changed here.
"It's going to take time, but we're in a results business so nobody else sees that, or nobody else wants to see it. They just want to see results on the pitch straight away.
"Sometimes, no matter how hard you try it takes time.
"We're all trying really hard, it's just not going for us at the moment. But hopefully, when we get a squad it will do."

“It would appear that everybody agrees, except the board and management team, that we are in trouble and unless there is a big change it is just going to get worse. We are constantly being told that there is no money so basically we are stuck with what we have got. If that is the case then surely we have to cha nge the way we play, all this flash passing which results in twenty passes but we are still in our own half and the majority have been to Slocombe has to stop. If this is Knills way then he has to go because to date it has been a disaster. Some hate him some people love him but nobody can deny that Brian Laws (and Russ) laid the foundation for Nigel to take us into the Championship. He took us to the brink but he then pulled us back into the second tier. I think he should be brought back now, at least we would know that if somebody needed a kick up the backside the manager would not be afraid to do it.”

“Forget about going for 2 strikers.
Just spend all the money on one good one.”

“From the Beeby article it would seem that Knill had already spent his budget and that it is the sale of Grant that has freed funds for loanees to come in. As the Grant transfer was a last minute, unexpected move, are we to assume that Knill (having already spent his budget) was not planning to bring in anybody in on loan and therefore thought the squad he already had was good enough, when obviously it wasn't.
Deereyme -the clappers are still here, your just to busy listening to yourself to notice. I am obviously concerned about the teams performances, a problem that I can't see improving until the management team is replaced. However, as far as the club is concerned, money is obviously very tight and I don't see the point of putting the club into debt in the hope that we can buy our way out of trouble. I also disagree with a number of people on this site who think that Wharton should put his own money into the club - WHY?. As for the guy who this last week suggested that Wharton has taken millions OUT of the club - give him a banana.”

“I just can't see this relationship with Knill working out long term and, as it obviously isn't working out short term, let's call the whole thing off. Where are all the clappers by the way? Hiding under rocks?”

“What a stupid statement, "We knew what it was going to be like this season, we also knew expectation levels are so high here, but it's changed, things have changed here".
So all the bull **** supplied to supporters by the club at the start of the season, and for that matter at the start of last season, is expected to be accepted by fans that have supported Scunthorpe for many years (61 years in my case).
We were informed that the team was not doing well because many of the players were already at the club when Knill took over, and things would be different when he got his own players in. He offloaded the players, and now he has his own players in, things are many times worse than before, bottom of the League with KNILL points, and four thrashings in the first four matches, out of two Cups, and the club turn round and complain about staying away supporters. Who in the club actually think that supporters can be expected to spoil their weekend by watching such dross that is being provided by this present Knill team.
To make things even worse if possible, he turns round and tells us that, he has no way of changing things, and that he hopes things will get better, but the truth being that this is going to be a worse season than last years epic.
Would it be possible for Wharton to make a statement regarding the sorry state of our club ???
and also why we have two so called players on continuous sick leave, Mozika and is it Collins ?, it's that long since he played I am not sure of his name.
TIME FOR A BIG CHANGE, BECAUSE SUPPORT HAS REACHED AN ALL TIME LOW.”

“Talk is cheap,we need players in ,all sicknotes back,a motivated team giving 100% and a manager to kick a few ****s, and bang on Whartons door to find out if he really wants SUFC to continue in freefall into the conference. We need actions not words."UP THE IRON"!!!”

“Not sure about that ExPat, there must be plenty of good out of contract players due to the slimming down of squads. It's the fact we're in this position again after the last few years that worries me more. No lessons learned and acted upon. Why should we care?”

“Who, of any quality, is going to want to come to a team at the bottom of League 1 & out of all competitions so far?”
