Longest and coldest winter in 50 years
SCUNTHORPE weather forecaster Terry Towse has said this is officially the longest and coldest winter in nearly 50 years.
He said it has now been 91 days since he last recorded a temperature in double figures - the longest since the winter of 1962/63.
He said: "We did get a cold start to March in 2006 and generally these two months have been the coldest since 1987.
"But it's 91 days, since December 9, since I recorded a temperature of 10 degrees Celsius, and that goes back to the 1962/63 winter.
"It's most unusual. The highest I've recorded has been about nine.
"At this time of year, the average should be about eight degrees. Hopefully in the next week or so we might lift those temperatures up a bit."
And Mr Towse said the overnight temperatures are still plunging - with Sunday night proving colder than any night of the winter.
Then, temperatures dipped to minus six degrees Celsius in Scunthorpe - compared to a low of minus four in February.
He added: "I think we will start getting some double figure temperatures from mid-March."

“Our MEP Godfrey Bloom has done a great deal of research into global warming and he has shown what we have now found to be true. Weather and warming works in cyclical patterns.
Research has also been done to monitor the temperature of the atmosphere which has found to be constant and not rising.
If we got constant hot weather in summer why are we not prepared for it? We still get some hotter than average summers and also get some colder than average winters.
Another fact is that the UK put 2% of the CO2 into the world's environment. If we stopped all CO2 being released would it make any difference? Also does CO2 really make much difference to global warming? Scientists say not.
Remember that YOU are getting heavily taxed by the government as they believe in global warming.
