M&S decision welcomed by Scunthorpe Moving Forward group

A decision to give the green light for a new retail park in Scunthorpe has been welcomed by campaigners.

The Scunthorpe Moving Forward group has supported the Simons Developments proposal, which will bring Marks & Spencer back to the town and also provide a new Debenhams store.

Mr Justice Hickinbottom gave the go ahead for the Doncaster Road scheme after a judicial review into North Lincolnshire Council's decision to grant planning permission for it.

The project had attracted fierce opposition because of its perceived impact on the town centre, as well as traffic and environmental issues.

But Scunthorpe Moving Forward member Judy Bradley said: "Far from it being the demise of the town, it will be the making of the town.

"It is only five minutes away from the town centre and it is money being spent in our locality.

"We would love to get involved in helping the town centre and putting forward ideas.

"I honestly believe people will not go out of town as much as they did.

"We love Scunthorpe and want it to do well but things have changed and towns have changed, not just in our area but all over."
