MP will fight for Corus workers
SCUNTHORPE MP Elliot Morley has pledged to fight for the future of workers made redundant at Corus after talks with the key players.
The steel giant, owned by Indian firm Tata, announced last week it would be cutting another 500 jobs in Scunthorpe to try to survive the recession.

Scunthorpe MP Elliot Morley.
Mr Morley said he wants to work with Yorkshire Forward and the Government to make sure opportunities for retraining and new jobs are in place at Corus as soon as possible.
He said: "Yorkshire Forward is going to set up a task force to assist people at Corus who are taking redundancy.
"They will set up a facility on site and work with management, unions, the job centre and other agencies.
"There will be specialist advice for people or retraining, setting up on their own and other job opportunities and what help may be available for them.
"The Jobcentre has received some more funding to help them deal with the current situation. I will be having more talks next week."
Yorkshire Forward chief executive Tom Riordan added his support to the job seekers, pledging his organisation would help where it could.
He said: "This news is a real blow for our region and our thoughts are with all the individuals and families affected by this news.
"I want to reassure them we are ready to provide support to those who need it during these times."
The Government announced on Thursday it would be making £5-million available to help people affected by the job cuts announced at Corus.
At the same time, business minister Pat McFadden said Corus remained a nationally-important company, employing about 20,000 in the UK.
About 2,000 people across the country will lose their jobs following the latest round of cuts provoked, the company said, by the failure of steel orders to return to expected levels.
The firm insists it has to restructure until order book levels return to more usual volumes.
The latest cuts follow an earlier round of redundancies in January, when 93 workers in Scunthorpe lost their jobs.

“Morley promised to help me and the other 160 who worked at mondi and did nothing, but anybody would think corus is the only employer in scunthorpe, what about all the other firms that are closing down or laying people off in this town there is no help for them so why should corus workers get special treatment, this town is called scunthorpe not corusthorpe.”

“Mee,Scunny
Get real. This man is an admitted fraudster. He is only trying to hang on for the golden handshake. All this apparent getting behind local is all part of this. He states he is stll working for Scunthorpe.
Why will he not call a public meeting so the people of Scunthorpe can get some answers they deserve. He can not hide away forever.”

“Mr Morley fighting for the steel workers, perhaps you should stand back and see the way his party has acted in the last few years. We now have a Lord Mandelson who was involved in some alleged shady deals involving steel. The same Lord Mandelson (unelected) who was kicked out twice for dodgy dealings, who now seems to be running the country. His party has spent millions on trying to hush up the expense claims. His party has killed or been responsible for the death of thousands of innocent people and even now trying to suppress the truth coming out. His party has opened the flood gates to the world and although we have valued people coming to this country I believe a very high percentage are in fact the rejects from other countries. It is a crazy situation with the French boarder and the so called asylum seekers, is France not a safe place? (I expect I will now be labeled as a BMP Storm Trooper). It seems strange that an elected member of a public body feels it's right to demonstrate against another elected member of a public body. It was Mr Morley's party that has brought in so many rules and regulations that has put companies under a lot of pressure and the end people who suffer are the employees. But I hear people say its not the Government but the EU rules, need I say more.
It the same with local government at the moment, since when has Scunthorpe been in Yorkshire? I seem to be hearing a lot of late about Yorkshire Forward, I can only assume yet another body who employee people in none jobs and pay vast amounts. So when you complain to the council "it's not use its somebody else" so the elected members can distance themselves from any criticism.
Mr Morley has been part of all this and at the same feathering his own nest. But please Mr Morley keep on telling us what you are doing for the community and people will get an opportunity to voice their feelings against you. Unless of course the ST adopts Anthony's suggestion, then they will have to haul out pensioners for shouting "rubbish" or arresting somebody under the Anti Terrorism Law for wearing the wrong T-shirt.”

“to his credit, I've noticd a bit of a sea change in Morley's attitude since the hoohah over his...ahem 'admin error'
He seems to be getting behind local issues whereas before he was less visible than an Anne Frank drum solo.
Maybe it's taken all this for him to realign his priorities. I'm not sure it will be enough for the electorate to forgive him, I personally think that is beyond him, but if he sees out his term fighting for the local public and if he's cleared by the inquiry, then I for one will wish him well in his future career.
Lets not forget the 21 years we were happy to have him.......”

“So, Elliot Morley has pledged to fight for the future of workers made redundant.
No thanks Mr Morley, you concentrate on fighting your (soon to happen) high court fraud case.
Like has been said earlier - you are totally discredited and an embarrasment to the town.
We are better off without you.”
