Murphy considering his United future as League One beckons

IRON keeper Joe Murphy will sit down with Scunthorpe United in the next 10 days to discuss his future.

But the out-of-contract 29-year-old admits whether he is happy to be a League One player is a 'big question'.

One of the longest-serving players on their books, the Iron are currently in the process of putting together a package to try to persuade Murphy to extend his stay at Glanford Park.

But having spent three of his five seasons with United in the second tier, the Irishman will think long and hard about his future, with Scunthorpe all but relegated back to the third tier on Monday.

"I have to ask myself whether I can be a League One goalkeeper, which is a big question," Murphy told the Telegraph.

"When you're out of contract you can speak to other clubs and there's been one or two things, but nothing will happen until maybe June time because of people having a break.

"I spoke to (goalkeeping coach) Neil Cutler a week ago and he said the gaffer here is putting a package together, so I'll have to sit down with him to discuss that before the end of the season.

"I've got a baby on the way so I've got to think about my family, and everybody wants to play at as high a level as they can.

"I'm going to have to do a lot of thinking."

Murphy was also part of the United squad relegated from the Championship in 2008.

Yet despite being highly-rated, and regarded as one of the club's most saleable assets, he stuck around to help the Iron bounce straight back into the second tier.

Deciding whether he will do the same again is going to take a lot of thought and it is not a choice he will make in the immediate aftermath of Monday's latest relegation, an occasion the former Sunderland and West Brom stopper describes as 'one of the worst days of my career'.

"I wanted to play football when I came here and I've ended up playing who knows how many games, at least a couple of hundred," added Murphy.

"I've played at Championship level three out of the five seasons I've been here and had a great connection with previous managers.

"There's a great bunch of lads here, even with what's happened. The dressing room is a great one to be a part of.

"You don't see a goalkeeper being bought that hasn't been playing, so these four or five years playing consistently has done me a lot of good.

"That will be in my mind when I look at what offers I've got.

"I'm not going to go anywhere for money, that doesn't bother me. I know I'm not going to be going anywhere to get rich enough to just sit around by the time I'm 35.

"I know I can't be guaranteed to play anywhere, but whether I'm going to be first choice or not will be a big factor wherever I am next season."

“Time to go Joe,you have been just as bad as most of our squad, let in a lot of bad positional goals and can also be accused of being a sicknote at times, outstanding when we won league one title but you have lived off that ever since.Keep chasing the money Joe we need new hungry blood in our team."UP THE IRON"!!!”

“I can't imagine life at Glanford Park without Joe. He has been the backbone of our Golden period.
Knilly has virtually said we need a strong defence for next season so I hope the board put an offer in place for Murph that he can't refuse.
I would imagine that with the slash and burn sale that is going to happen then the wage bill will be cut significantly enough to keep our top players this summer.
NOW is the time for the board to make the decision about which league they actually want our club to play in.
Mind you...we still don't have to install the new seats yet do we !!??

COME ON JOE...GLANFORD PARK IS YOUR HOME AND YOU ARE OUR HERO. TWO YEARS MORE PLEASE!”

“With the loss of TV money uncle Steve will once again go for a slash and burn policy. Joe and Mirfin will both be shown the door one way or another. As long as Corporal Jones goes as well.”

“seem to remember similar story as this last year.I can understand Joes side but would like him to be positive & sign a 2 year contract with an option of a further year.It will be interesting to hear what Alan Knill has in mind, should be lots of GOSSIP for ST to fill their pages with.No doubt Mr DOFF will have a fair input as well”
