A 4-0 home win against promotion-chasing Sheffield United on Saturday appeared to signal a revival in fortunes.
But the club's board acted after last night's defeat at Gigg Lane left them 15th in the league table.
Stevenage remain 11 points ahead of Scunthorpe, who currently occupy the final relegation place in 21st position.
