McDermott: I'm enjoying the challenge
THERE could hardly be a bigger contrast between the bright lights of glamour club Manchester City and the dimmer surrounds of Scunthorpe United.
But winger Donal McDermott insists he is loving the challenge of his loan spell at Glanford Park.

Donal McDermott
He arrived at the end of January – and knows he has to do well with the Iron to steer his career in the direction he wants it to take.
So far he has started just two games and come on as substitute in two others, languishing most of the time on the bench.
But while he thirsts for a bigger taste of the action, he is happy to have to fight for his place.
"While I was out on loan at Chesterfield in League Two earlier in the season, I was playing fairly regularly," said the 20-year-old Irishman.
"It's a lot harder in the Championship. It's a level that I have not played at before. It takes some getting used to.
"There is also a lot more competition for places.
"That's what I want though, I want to be challenged, I didn't want it to be easy for me coming here."
McDermott is a winger with a bit of pace, a trick or two in his locker – and an eye for goal.
He scored five times during his three months out on loan with Chesterfield.
And he might have opened his account at United in the opening minute of his home debut against Crystal Palace.
He knows that would have given him a dream start – but is not going to beat himself up about it.
"Everyone can miss chances," he declared.

“Well said, Dave from Paris. The positive aspect of course is that NA hasn't spent much on these loan guys.
Spence, N'Gala, Friend were all useless. Maloney at least played in the correct position. We should be building Thommo up rather than playing a Man C loanee.
I suspect though that (useless) Jones and Milne are eating up valuable wage resource without contributing anything on the pitch. The same goes for Forte, May and Morris though its hardly the fault of the latter.”

“I didn't think this was an area which needed improving on when the lad was brought in. I still can't see him making the sort of impact we need. In the loan market this season Adkins has been poor. Maloney was the only one who might of done a decent job but Spence, N'Gala and McDermott all lack the experience and the little bit of something extra. He should of been bringing players in who could of put some real pressure on the current squad to try and get the best out of them.”

“P.Doff's day off? I think he will come good, particularly towards the end of the season when our midfielders become extremely tired, and will be able to capitalise on fatigued defenders.”

“True Rich, but I'd still start McDermott at Ipswich because Woolford has been woeful of late. He owes us a good performance from the start unless he's destined to be an impact player from the bench. Not doing enough to suggest he can cope at this level, though I appreciate it takes time given the long way he's come in a short space of time.”
