A decision is expected be made this week on whether to progress with the merger of two Scunthorpe schools.

A senior member of North Lincolnshire Council is being recommended "to proceed to the next stage of the amalgamation process and publish a public notice which outlines the proposal to merge Grange Lane Infant School and Grange Lane Junior School."

Councillor Rob Waltham (Brigg and Wolds), a member of the authority's cabinet who looks after people-related matters, will decide whether to follow that course.

Grange Lane Infant School and Grange Lane Junior School have different governing bodies, head teachers and sites.

In October 2011 North Lincolnshire Council, the education authority, successfully applied to the Department for Education for funding to create a new-build primary school.

Formal consultation with the public took place in May, June and July this year with 93 per cent who took part being in favour of amalgamation.

Both schools held open days during the summer when council representatives were available to answer questions people had about the proposal.

The proposal before Councillor Waltham is to create one school from September 2014 on the Grange Lane Junior site.
