SCUNTHORPE United centre back David Mirfin has experienced the disappointment of missing out on big games.

So he's determined to try to be involved in the Iron's glamour Carling Cup clash at home to Manchester United.

"When I was at Huddersfield, we played Chelsea twice, but each time I was only on the bench," said Mirfin.

"I played in both games for Scunthorpe against Manchester City last season – but playing against Manchester United is something even bigger.

"It's a brilliant draw for the club. Manchester United are the biggest club in England.

"It's good for the fans because it's one of those games they can look forward to and get excited about. Hopefully there will be a full house here.

"For the players, it's a chance to test yourselves against players of international class.

"You don't know what team they are going to put out but any team they do, you know is going to be of real quality.

"As a player, you always want to be involved in big games. It gives you more impetus to play well and make sure you stay in the team.

"But at the moment, the Manchester United game is a long way off.

"We have got some points to play for first in the Championship."
