TONY Daws is set to seal his first loan signing as Scunthorpe United caretaker boss tomorrow.

The Iron are on the verge of concluding a deal to bring in a Championship player, giving him time to adjust during the current international break.

Caretaker assistant manager Lee Turnbull gave little away when questioned about the new arrival, but with United currently struggling in front of goal, it is likely to be someone with attacking threat.

"When Tony was given the opportunity to take over, it was a name that he immediately highlighted and indicated," said Turnbull.

"We mentioned two or three players and fortunately of the two or three, this one has been agreed.

"Things like this have a habit of biting you on the backside, but we are very confident we will secure his signature.

"Everything has been agreed, it's just a case of dotting the 'is' and crossing the 'ts'.

"I think it adds to the squad.

"At the moment, we're clearly in a run of form that means we're going to be in for a hard struggle towards the end of the season.

"Our form at present needs changing if we're going to get out of the trouble we're in.

"I still believe in the players. We've got some good quality players in the squad.

"But a new face freshens things up."

Given the current managerial vacancy at Glanford Park, that is almost certain to be the only addition before the loan window closes at 5pm tomorrow.

The next chance Scunthorpe will have to strengthen will be in the summer, by which time a new boss is almost certain to be in charge.

"I think, regarding any other movement, it may be prevalent to wait and see who the next manager is," Turnbull added.

"I don't know what the schedule is for bringing a new manager in, but that doesn't give the football club a lot of time.

"There will be one player coming in tomorrow, but I think that may be the only bit of movement, unless we get an indication tomorrow of a potential target that a new manager may want.

"It's difficult anyway because of the amount of loan players that you can have in the club.

"You can't go out there and bring four or five in when you already have a certain number in.

"We've been working very hard and we know there are areas all over the pitch where we need strengthening."

“It seems it's a different player this time round, and it's arguable whether it's going to help the areas we need strengthening anyway. So maybe Bara was right to go after the difficult targets, as this player, while quick to get the deal done, isn't exactly what we need.”

“Eddie, It says, "When Tony was given the opportunity to take over, it was a name that he immediately highlighted and indicated," said Turnbull.”

“Why is it that Bara struggled for weeks to bring the right player in, yet a week after he's sacked it sounds like we're bringing someone in pretty easily? Was it Bara negotiating last time, and the chairman this?”
