New faces in United dressing room have the same old spirit

FACES in the dressing room may have changed but the Iron spirit still remains the same.

That's the message from acting captain Sam Togwell who insists he has no doubts that Scunthorpe United can survive in the Championship this season.

The 26-year-old player is one of the few constants in a United squad that has been transformed in the past four weeks with eight new faces coming in.

He admits there was a spell when he wondered who would be coming through the dressing room door next as manager Ian Baraclough set about trying to strengthen his squad with a combination of permanent and loan signings.

But now the transfer window is closed, Togwell believes it is time for things to settle down again.

"The new faces who have come in are all showing that they are prepared to work hard," said the Iron midfield man.

"The spirit is still there in the dressing room. The confidence is still there too. We still believe we are going to stay up.

"The ball is in our court. We have games in hand on the teams around us – and if we win them, then we will be out of the bottom three."

After only one win in the last 10 games since beating Hull at the KC Stadium last November, United are in real relegation trouble.

And their problem home form will be put to the test again on Saturday when the Tigers travel to Glanford Park looking for revenge.

"There is no better way to start winning at home again than in a derby like this," Togwell insisted.

"We know we have done them once and we have got to be up for the battle and make sure we get a win somehow.

"Our pitch is not great but it does not matter what surface we play on, we have to find a way of winning games – win ugly as they say."

Though disappointed with the 2-0 defeat at Middlesbrough on Tuesday night, Togwell was delighted with the character shown by the team.

"After conceding a sloppy early goal, we dug in and worked hard," he said.

"Previously we could have gone on to concede three, four or five after a start like that. But we showed great character and that is the minimum requirement now."

Defender Michael Nelson and striker Lee Miller will be the latest United signings to make their debuts against Hull.

"It has been a bit strange trying to get to know everybody who has come in," Togwell confessed.

"You began to wonder who would be coming into the building the next day!

"But the transfer window has closed now and it is a chance for us to settle down and work hard as a squad to keep this club in the Championship.

"Hopefully too, some of our injuries will begin to clear up. At Middlesbrough we could just about have fielded a team who were out through injury of illness."

“Kingston-upon-Hull is a City you idiot, by the way so is Wakefield. Men against boys again and you know it, now go and prepare for relegation, you are literally out of your league.”

“Another thrashing? Please expand on this? Go on...PLEASE.

Hull is about as authentic as a football town as Castleford, Wakefield or Milton Keynes....15,000 plastics who emerged from the suburbs surrounding Hull and its malnourished families, crowded into rotting tenament slums.

What have Hull ever done? Wembley once and a year in the top flight? I have a lot of respect for your hardcore support of 5,000 but beyond that it's just a FAKE FARCE.

    Up the Iron!”

“Brigg Town, Winterton and Barton Town all have better club houses than the Iron Bar - WHY IS THIS? They can all not only accomodate more supporters they also have better facilities. I'm not so sure that BTFC's bar is potentially te place to drink in Brigg but the Iron Bar should be...it may be out of town but IF the club had astroturf pitches (like Walsall etc) it would be busy every night and also allow scope to open the restaurant. I understand that the Study United have alowed for an increased restaurant area in the new media centre but here is the experience on the United board to capitalise in this (or any other football related business, for that matter?)...were GP to host a gym as well it would be buzzing down there.

Even without astroturf pitches and a gym, how come the Iron Bar has never been open for the World Cup, the Euros, the CL final or the FA Cup final? It's not even open for United games on Sky - clueless....I dont think it should even make money, it could be ran as a non profit venture to benefit the of townsfolk...it is all well and good the club making the players moan about supporters not getting behind the team but (IMHO) that is entirely in the clubs hands...if you want a vocal crowd, get them drunk - add an outdoor HACIENDA to the Iron Bar with heaters, tables, a juke box, a coal fire and smoking areas for a minimal fee and increase the capacity by as much as we like - the land is there and we own it.

Even done on the cheap - GP could be a 24/7/365 facility - it has a gym, it has a field, it has a bar and it has a restaurant...and these are all closed, never upgraded and then we hear the club moaning about a lack of interest and being skint...HOPELESS IRON, WETTER THAN A MERMAIDS BREASTS WHEN IT COMES TO TURNING A QUID.

    UP THE IRON!”

“BTFC Club! Had a few pints in there in the past , in fact played for the team. Should be the busiest club/pub in town, but (like the people of Scunthorpe with their football team) the people of Brigtg don't know what they are missing”

“Anyone else absently hear the Hull KR phone in, yesterday eveningn following the sports forum on Humberside?

I dont follow rugby but it struck me that a club on similar gates but less income (Hull KR) were committed to rebuilding their ground, intergrating several off the pitch initives and including the supporters - even as a non rugby fan I was struck by the CEO and Chairmans drive and focus. They problems they faced did mirror Uniteds but they have a plan and are sticking to it...the very rare times one hears Wharton etc speak they neither sound convincing or committed to any plan. I applaud the new Study United funded exec lounge and the manner in which that the club have fooled 90% of supporters that it is 'ours' but we need more.

Basking in the glory of the Adkins era is no good when we are losing every week - now that inevitability has occured the cracks are there for all to see.

Seeming as Wharton has invested nothing in near on a decade at SUFC (can anyone deny this?), whilst isolating any potential investors or the council I dony believe things will ever change at SUFC..that said, very few owners do invest in clubs but the true entrepeneurs make the very most of what they have - with SUFC enjoying so much on the pitch success of late, one has to ask the question is why we havent capitalised on any of it in order to further the clubs progression?

The big test will come next season because the support that will drop off is newer/out of town fans and the club lost the older/Scunthorpe supporters in the wasted years following the move from the Old Show Ground.

On a personal note - I won the lottery last week and invested the ten pounds in IVY SEED. In the dead of night I'll be planting this at GP despite previous foiled attempts at GORILLA WARFARE TACTICS!

    Up the Iron!”

“Mike Scunthorpe and Carl Lewis Derby.
I have seriously looked at personally investing into SUFC particularly at the beginning of he season, I have also approached other serious financial friends who were also interested when the club seemed to be performing pretty well under Nigel. The situation at present is looking dire right now and other parties have gone luke warm on the idea. I think we will have to see where we are placed at the end of the season, then take stock and see if we can't get a meeting going.
I was particularly interested in Saracens rugby club move from Watford to Barnet Athletic ground where they are looking to put a new stand in which costs only £1.25M this will cater for 12,000 people as this is the new minimum ground capacity in Rugby Union by 2012. The stand is made in Germany on a meccano principle but looks and does the business. Anything is better than the current ramshackle ground, you never know it might even interest other players we look to get in the building. I will keep you posted as things move along. As a Scunthonian living in the deep South I have a strong affinity to the place. UTI !!”
