SCUNTHORPE United manager Alan Knill will hope to use all his powers of persuasion this week to try to keep hold of Ramon Nunez for the remainder of the season.

His initial month's loan spell from Leeds United runs out after the Iron's Good Friday game at Coventry City.

But after scoring what proved to be a priceless winning goal in the relegation clash at Crystal Place on Saturday – his first in English football – the 25-year-old is eager to stay and help the Iron win their battle for survival.

It would be a huge blow to United's hopes if promotion-chasing Leeds do not agree to extend the loan.

"I am grateful to Scunthorpe for the opportunity they have given me to come here and get some games in," said Nunez.

"At the moment I only have one game left on my loan period and we will have to wait and see what happens after that.

"But I am happy here at Scunthorpe and I would like to stay and help them stay in the Championship.

"It is important for them to do that.

"And I think with the new manager, the new ideas he has brought in and the players that are here, we can do that.

"It is not my first experience of being involved in a relegation battle.

"I know what it is all about and what it takes to stay up.

"It is similar to what happened to me before with Pueblo (in Mexico).

"Everyone expected them to go down but they were a bunch of players who worked hard for each other and we stayed up – I think it can be the same here. I want to stay here to witness that."

Nunez knows the importance of his goal at Selhurst Park, which fired United 2-0 ahead in the 57th minute.

"I am very excited to get my first goal here in England – but the three points is the most important thing," he insisted.

"It was an important time to score but I think all the boys deserve great credit for the way they battled through an outrageous 98 minutes.

"As soon as I hit the shot, I knew it was going in.

"I had got in front of the ball, but had time to get back and take a touch before getting my shot in.

"The manager here has given the front four the freedom to play, but also a responsibility for keeping the shape.

"I thought we kept our shape well throughout the game and that is one of the reasons why we won."

The Iron are offering coach travel to the Ricoh Arena on Friday for just £5.

To take advantage of the offer, supporters need to either visit the Glanford Park ticket office or call 0871 221 1899.

“Sounds like this boy has been a fantastic loanee...!

Let's hope we can keep him until at least the end of the season...!”
