'New Woolies' brings 30 jobs
THIRTY new jobs will be created when a landmark Scunthorpe building becomes a discount goods store.
Leeds-based Waremart has bought the lease of the former Woolworths store in Scunthorpe's The Parishes shopping centre and hopes to start trading from this weekend.

Initially, 30 staff members will be taken on - some of them former Woolworths employees - and the new store will trade seven days a week and sell up to 20,000 different lines.
Newly–appointed store manager Tim Lane, 47, said: "We made a quick decision to take over the lease and started re-fitting a week ago as we want to get our cracking products rolled out to shoppers in Scunthorpe as fast as possible."
North Lincolnshire Council leader Coun Mark Kirk welcomed the investment.
"It's a great boost for the high street and shows UK retailers have confidence in our local economy."
Mr Lane, who previously managed the Doncaster and Thorne branches, said products on sale in the two-storey premises would range from books at 10p a time to £500 plasma television sets.
The former Woolworths store closed down on December 27 last year with the loss of 50 jobs after just six years of trading in The Parishes.

“Well it is certainly no Selfridges, selling old model plasma TVs and anything else too tacky / too cheap / too out of date for established high street retailers.
No doubt Shopachecks will be welcome.”

“This is great news, it will fill a big void left by the failure of Woolworths.
The people of Scunthorpe should support their local town centre & High Street, if the footfall increases so too might the number of businesses looking to set up in Scunthorpe.”

“A pound shop selling £500 TVs - I don't think so! It's only the price ranges that Woolworths sold at. What a silly comment by G.Etreal.
The shop hasn't even opened yet! Good luck to the company that's given 30 new jobs to our community.”
