New lease of life for Victorian steam loco that served Crowle, Belton, Haxey and Epworth
A new lease of life is to be given to an historic Victorian steam locomotive that ran through the Isle of Axholme to Epworth, Haxey and Crowle and later starred in famous 1970 film The Railway Children.
Award-winning Yorkshire heritage railway the Keighley and Worth Valley has announced it is to give Lancashire & Yorkshire 0-6-0 No. 957 a full overhaul, which will give it a licence to thrill nostalgia-lovers for another 10 years.
Long before it was picked out for preservation, No. 957’s duties included hauling the mixed passenger and goods trains on the Isle of Axholme Joint Railway which linked the bleak and windswept Marshland with communities around Haxey, Epworth, Belton and Crowle, those along the Fockerby branch and outposts like Reedness Junction.
No 957 will make its final run on January 20 before being treated to a major overhaul.

The loco - built in 1887 - starred as The Green Dragon in The Railway Children which starred Jenny Agutter.
It survived into the era of British Railways when it ran as No 52044, being withdrawn from service in 1959 and saved from the scrapyard.
The Keighley & Worth Valley Railway is operated almost entirely by unpaid volunteers running steam and diesel trains at weekends throughout the year and daily at holiday times for nearly five miles through Bronte Country from Keighley to Oakworth, Haworth and Oxenhope.
It was the first complete standard gauge branch line to be re-opened by enthusiasts in the UK and has been the location for The Railway Children and many more films and television series.
If you wish to see the former Isle loco before it is taken out of service for repairs, visit the KWVR at BD22 8NJ.
It serves Keighley, Ingrow, Damems, Oakworth, Haworth and Oxenhope
