Nominate your champion for North Lincolnshire community award
Former winners of community awards in North Lincolnshire are continuing to encourage people to nominate their community champions.
One of these former winners was a social enterprise based in Scunthorpe called The Old School Clothing Co.
It was set up in 2010 to allow people aged between 16 and 25 to gain design and retail experience.
Volunteers from the store, along with project supporter David Plumtree, picked up the youth-led volunteer project (VInspired award) at last year's ceremony.
In the run up to the council's Community Champion Awards 2012, Mr Plumtree said it was important for people to start nominating.
He said: "The whole thing for me is it recognises the efforts that young people put in and it is really important that we recognise these achievements.
"Over the course of around two years, we had nearly 200 volunteers.
"It was great for them to win this award.
"I would definitely encourage people to nominate.
"It is just a moment when you suddenly realise that people do realise what you are trying to do."
Mr Plumtree said anyone interested in volunteering should get in touch with Scunthorpe-based Voluntary Action North Lincolnshire.
The Old School Clothing Co was based in Robert Street in Scunthorpe and the ground floor of the building was a shop selling vintage clothes, as well as art and crafts produced by young people.
The upstairs provided a space for creativity, as well as putting together all of the necessary ingredients to ready youngsters for employment. It ran until June this year.
The Community Champion Awards scheme is being run by North Lincolnshire Council, in association with the Scunthorpe Telegraph.
Nominations are now open, with 26 awards to be presented across four categories.
The awards are split into sections – volunteer, achievement, community and inspiration.
They will be presented in a ceremony at the Baths Hall on Doncaster Road, Scunthorpe, on Thursday, November 29.
