NORTH Lincolnshire's bid for a new Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) will be submitted to the Government today.

Local authorities must submit their bids to the Government today, detailing which councils will be involved in their LEP.

The North Lincolnshire bid will call for a pan-Humber LEP, despite the objections of the two north Humber councils, which wish to form their own partnership.

A North Lincolnshire Council report on the bid said: "The Humber has a major opportunity to transform its economic base and with it, the prosperity of the communities on both banks of the Humber.

"The private sector and business organisations in the Humber are mindful of this.

"The council would certainly be failing in its duties if it didn't listen carefully and respond accordingly to the views of business organisations, such as the Humber Chamber Of Commerce and the Humber Chemical Focus, and many significant businesses on both banks of the Humber and elsewhere. Fragmenting the Humber is not compatible with strategic leadership of its key assets, including ports, renewables, logistics and petro-chemicals.

"Creating two LEPs in the Humber, with the estuary serving as the divide and not the bridge between both banks, would fragment and fundamentally weaken the Humber's common economic interests for no compelling reason."

As previously reported, Hull City Council and East Riding Council will seek to form their own LEP.

The Department For Communities And Local Government will make a final decision over which bid to back ahead of the demise of Regional Development Agency Yorkshire Forward next year.

The Government wants the LEPs to provide the strategic leadership in their areas, set out local economic priorities and create the right environment for business and growth.

Alongside the LEP proposals, a group of businesses is working on a plan for an organisation to represent Yorkshire's interests at national and international level.

Once formed, it is expected they will be able to apply for limited public funding for projects to deliver economic growth.

This group, led by manufacturer Barry Dodd, believes some functions, such as access to finance, large-scale and sectoral innovation, promotion and inward investment, work best at a wider level.

Mr Dodd said: "We are having to consider an area that's bigger than Yorkshire.

We are talking about economic geography as opposed to strictly regional borders.

The whole idea of these enterprise partnerships is they are about economic geography.

Yorkshire is the best internationally known brand and it's economic pull is bigger than Yorkshire itself."

“If that's the voice of reason, I'd hate to think what the average morons think. If I had to bet, my money would be on businesses on the North bank of the Humber generating far more money than those in N. Lincs but is that a reason for this ridiculous sniping? The 'Real' businesses in manufacturing and high tech. engineering just get on with working and exporting whilst all these councils full of self-important career idiots carry on wasting money and pretending that they have the least idea how to encourage business growth. Any initiative which can bring together all the assets of a region should be applauded. Personally, I don't like Hull, but I would not let that get in the way of objectivity if I were trying to benefit the region as our elected representatives are supposed to be doing.”

“Its not about 'public opinion' its about what businesses want for the economic vitality of the region. They are being ignored by the north bank councils, and NE Lincs dont seem too interested either.

It seems intelligence in the whole region is low, can no one understand that THIS HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH HUMBERSIDE!!!! It is an ENTERPRISE partnership NOT a local authority.

Parochialism is what holds this region back, both on the north and south bank. Until there is a modicum of intelligence thrown into the debate the region will always go backwards.”

“Why oh why are we wanting to join up with those north bank leeches again, when they formed Humberside all the money was being generated down here in the south but being spent up there in the north, those up north were that paranoid about promoting the north that they even called the airport Humberside Hull airport and people drove over the bridge from the south to be told it was in the south. our roads down here are a farce compared with the system up there, where can you go from the southern end of the bridge - east or west, you cant go south as the road has not been built - a road that has been in dire need of being built to replace the poorly developed dangerous A15, you cannot go anywhere in Lincolnshire by motorway barring the 180 up here the rest of the county is virtually devoid of them.
So the NLC want to join up the the northerners, would have anything to do with the fact that NLC is now in a political wilderness surround by blue and yellow apart from the Hull lot.
Look if these wind farms and other major development on the south bank get under way we will be able to buy Hull in a couple of years, leave them alone up there and lets get the money spent in the same counties its generated in, NLC, NELC and Lincolnshire council should be joining forces to create an LEP and bring back the power of the yellowbellies.
We ought to put the Bridges tolls up so that Hully Gullies have to fork out to come and work where the money is.”

“Well lets hope the government actually listen to the North Lincs council and the Hull and Humber Chamber on these important matters. Unfortunately the North Bank councillors seem to be snubbing local business and the private sector by wanting to turn the area into some sort of tourist destination, turning their backs on the REAL business in the region.

This is suicide for the North bank, but should your developments on the south bank go ahead, i wish you the best of luck, at least you've got grounded and realistic councils there...”
