Council tax payments to North Lincolnshire Council will remain at their current levels after a zero per cent increase was approved by councillors.

The authority held its budget-setting meeting tonight and, as expected, councillors voted in favour of the charge freeze.

It means residents living in an average Band D property will continue to pay the council £1,273.86 for services during the 2012-13 financial year.

Humberside Fire Authority has also opted to freeze the charges for its portion of the council tax, although Humberside Police Authority voted in favour of a 3.9 increase in the precept for policing, meaning the overall charge will go up slightly.

Other investments announced by the council as part of its budget at tonight's meeting included:

£5 million on school buildings over four years

£1.3m to refurbish The Lilacs care home

A £1.2m children's campus to replace two existing children's homes

£200,000 to develop a community hub in Broughton

£150,000 for the Winterton community hub

£250,000 towards crime prevention

£110,000 to develop a rural youth initiative

£140,000 extra funding for youth activities

£40,000 to continue concessionary rail fares for older people

Extra funds to take community grants up to £500,000

A £600,000 investment in 2014-15 towards rural transport and highways

£230,000 to create 40 apprenticeships at the council

£43,000 for free swimming for under-16s in the summer holidays this year

“It seems to me that the police want an increase to keep buying new fleets of vehicles, even the PCSO's now have squad cars to bomb about in. They also need money for their new offices and refurbishments I should think. The general public though has to put up with the mini police stations closed more time than they are open. The general public also has to put up with anti social behavior and vandalism in our communities. All I see PCSO's and police doing is peering into car windscreens checking tax discs and vehicles in general looking for minor misdemeanors. The real crime that pi***s most of us off though seems to go largely undetected unless we the general public give them the evidence on a plate.”

“At least a little bit of good news.

Now if they could just do something like 2 hrs free parking in the town and try and get M&S into TJ Hughes. And as magnificent as the Baths and the Pods are - let's try and get some investment in the retail town centre.

I realise that would mean an increase in council tax so nevermind eh ;-)”

“So the Police have upped their share but the council is spending £250,000 on crime prevention?
Isn't this down to the Police as well?”
