MORE than half of the 175 potholes caused by snow and ice in North Lincolnshire have been repaired, with the rest scheduled to be patched up by the end of the week.

Each hole costs an average of £75 to repair and highways bosses have focussed first on the worst-affected roads, which included Scotter Road, Frodingham Road and Normanby Road in Scunthorpe.

Cash will be found in existing budgets and costs are not expected to spiral above previous winters.

Road maintenance chief Rob Beales told the Scunthorpe Telegraph: "At this time we estimate we have repaired 60 per cent of the potholes reported and we expect to complete the work by the end of this week.

"Cost of work will be covered out of our annual maintenance budget for carriageway and footway patching and we don't expect costs will be an issue."

Mr Beales added: "The return of the cold weather later in the week is obviously not welcome. However, it is causing us no major concerns.

"We continue to monitor the weather conditions 24 hours a day and have the gritter fleet on standby to react to any issues that arise.

"We have salt available for treating our road network and our stock levels are slowly being replenished from our supplier."

“Mel >> I didn't actually say we were worse than anywhere else. Just because other places are as bad / worse it doesn't make the state of our roads acceptable does it?”

    “Del and Mark

How far from North Lincs have you actually travelled?

The ice-pocked roads around South Yorks are far worse than around here.
Further south, there are some beauties in the East Midland area and around the Manchester area there are even diversions because of pot-holes.”

“Mel >> you are correct that this will happen in the cold weather but Mark has a very valid point that the lack of investment in the roads means the problem is far worse than it should be.

The main problem is that pothole patching is, by definition, a temporary measure and many of the current potholes are previous repairs that have opened up again. Whilst I commend the speed with which many of these have been patched there are far too many roads / footpaths in Scunthorpe that need resurfacing and the problem will continue to get worse until they are.”

“Is it really the snow and ice that has caused these problems or is it 10 years of lack of investment which the snow and ice has uncovered?”

“These ice blisters, which break up the surface tarmac and cause pot-holes have been happening throughout the UK during this very cold snap.

So I wish some people would stop moaning about the local council and accept that pot-holes, like burst pipes, will occur in freezing weather and accept that the council is working hard to repair them.”

“They have actually repaired these in very good time, well done for a change!”
